Paperback or Softback. Condición: New. Castles of Aberdeenshire: Historical and Descriptive Notices (1887). Taylor, William (ilustrador). Book.

Paperback. Condición: New. When first published, this 1887 volume was largely a reprint of "Castellated Architecture of Aberdeenshire" (1849), focussing on the forty-five Castles featured as the centres of influence and action in a district rich in historic associations. The wars of Robert Bruce, of Queen Mary, and of the Covenanters, had several of their most momentous conflicts within this region; it was here that the Jacobite rising of 1715 had its inception and first developments; and Aberdeenshire had its share in the final struggle on behalf of the Stuarts in 1745. The battles of Inverurie and Barra, of Culblean and Harlaw, of Corrichie, Craibstane, and Tullyangus, of Aberdeen and Alford, are landmarks of Scottish and local history. To these and many other events of a stirring epoch, the venerable strongholds whose configuration or remains are depicted in this volume, are closely linked. Taylor, William (ilustrador).…

Hardcover. Condición: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Numbered 23 on half-title page. Blue bevelled boards with gilt lettering on front cover and spine.Illustrated throughout in black and white. Top edges gilt, fore-edges and lower edges uncut. Head and tail of spine and corners and edges of covers bumped and worn, corners down to the card. Spine backstrip very faded, worn and damp (?) stained. Covers generally stained and marked. Pages browned, with odd reading-related crease and fingermark. Endpapers tanned, ownership bookplates on front eps. Page edges browned and dustmarked. Spine completely shaken, inner hinges cracking, textblock held only by endpapers which are extremely fragile and liable to tear unless professionally attended to soon. Last illustrated plate has detached, but is still present. The binding apart, I would describe the contents as being Good, as the text and illustrations are still clear and legible. Taking the binding into account, this is only Poor to Fair overall, but, given its scarcity, a definite re-bind candidate. Approx. 9 x 11 1/2 inches. Please note this is a large, heavy book so additional postage will be required. Wm. Taylor (ilustrador).…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This 1887 volume is to a considerable extent a reprint of Sir Andrew Leith Hay's 'Castellated Architecture of Aberdeenshire,' published in 1849. The aim, throughout, has been to present, in brief compass, the more interesting points connected with the various centres of influence and action in a district peculiarly rich in historic associations. Around not a few of these old castles have gathered the forces on the issues of whose warfare the fortunes of families, and even the fate of dynasties, have turned. The wars of Robert Bruce, of Queen Mary, and of the Covenanters, had several of their most momentous conflicts within this region; it was here that the Jacobite rising of 1715 had its inception and first developments; and Aberdeenshire also had its share, though a secondary one, in the final struggle on behalf of the Stuarts in 1745. To name the battles of Inverurie and Barra, of Culblean and Harlaw, of Corrichie, Craibstane, and Tullyangus, of Aberdeen and Alford, is to enumerate so many of the landmarks of Scottish or local history. To these and many other events of a stirring epoch, the venerable strongholds whose configuration or remains are depicted in this volume, are intimately related. Taylor, William (ilustrador). …
