This is No. XI of The Hudson's Bay Company Series, a sub-series within The Publications of the Champlain Society series. Edited by E. E. Rich with assistance by A. M. Johnson. Introduction by E. G. R. Taylor. This volume contains transcriptions of letters by or relating to the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) that were originally written from about 1680-1687. The Preface clarifies that discrepancies in the original letters' dating system means that some of the transcribed documents herein date as early to 1679 and as late to 1694. The Preface also describes the letters in this volume as being a companion collection to the minutes of HBC. Front colophon: "Five Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume have been printed. Fifty are reserved for Editorial purposes. The remaining Five Hundred are supplied only to Members of the Society and to Subscribing Libraries. This copy is No. 356.".

Spine gilt dull; fore-edge of upper board very slightly damp-stained; endpapers foxed; sporadic light foxing; pages unopened. Good to very good condition. "William Bourne, of Gravesend, by trade a gunner, was a successful writer of a new type of textbook. Neither a scholar nor of gentle birth, both of which were regarded as the prerequisites of authorship in the sixteenth century, when scientific books were expected to appear only in universities and to be read only by those fluent in Latin, Bourne nevertheless produced a whole series of technical manuals, written in English for the artisans and craftsmen of his own class. A Regiment for the Sea, which forms the core of the volume, is perhaps the earliest technical manual written by an Englishman. It is not simply his rules for navigation, for Bourne wrote much as he spoke, so that out of this instruction book for sailors a clear picture of the man himself emerges: serious, reliable, patriotic and with this inborn impulse to pass on his knowledge to others. The first edition of 1574 is printed here in full, with the additional material which was added to the 1580 edition. Professor Taylor has also included to Almanackes. She has written an introductory section to each text, and in her General Introduction she fills in the details of Bourne's life and discusses his various writings. There is a full Bibliography.".

Octavo (8 3/4" x 6") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria embossed on front cover with cover edges blind stamped. Narratives and documents edited by E G R Taylor. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society, second series, volume 113. firs edition. This is the first full account of the voyage of Edward Fenton, who set out in 1582 on a privateering voyage which was meant to outdo the exploits of Drake. It was a failure, and for this and other reasons Hakluyt never told the whole story. Taylor has assembled all the surviving records, which include official papers, two private diaries and some personal letters as well as Fenton's own journal. The preparation, execution and aftermath of the voyage, in which the Elizabethan character is clearly displayed, are of particular interest to naval, economic and political historians as well as geographers. Condition: Pages uncut. Jacket spine sunned and slightly age darkened. A very good copy in like jacket.
