Published the same year that he was promoted to full professor at Caltech, Linus Pauling's paper entitled 'Rotational Motion of Molecules in Crystals' laid out that diatomic molecules in crystals could only have one of two possible motions: rotation or oscillation. After submitting this paper in May and then returning from a trip to Europe during the summer of 1930, Pauling built an electron diffraction instrument in order to further study the molecular structure of chemical substances. In 1954 Pauling would win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and later win a second Nobel Prize for his peace activism in 1962. This particular copy of the journal was originally owned by Raymond Thayer Birge, who taught physics at UC Berkeley and was responsible for bringing Robert Oppenheimer and Ernest Lawrence to teach at the university during the 1930s.
