One of the most outstandi…ng characteristics of Istanbul's Byzan-tine monuments, as captured by Ottoman photographers, is their role as priceless documents in the city's history. The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.

It scrutinizes the transformations of this relation, which started with the sea baths in the second half of the 19th century and continued till the mid-20th century. Having brought together photographs, published material, ephemera, videos and music from varying private and institutional collections, prominently from Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection, the exhibition illustrates how a waterside city like Istanbul had to make do with sea baths that were enclosed with wooden panels, despite the effect of Westernization. It is a documentary testament of the radical transformations in the Republic's lifestyle, socialization of the norms of how Istanbulites used their free time, and the notion of sea, which once only evoked the ideas of trade, travel and scenery. The exhibition catalogue presents three articles, which approaches the relation of Istanbul with the sea between the second half of the 19th century and the mid-20th century from varying perspectives. The curator of the exhibition Zafer Toprak's article on the social transformation in relation with the Istanbulites intimacy with the sea is accompanied by Gokhan Akcura's work on sea and entertainment culture, and Meltem O. Gurel's study in which she reads the architectural interventions in regard to people s relation with the sea.

Elaborate ceremonial regulated access to the imperial family, creating a system of privilege which strengthened the centralised power.…Constantine followed the same model in his new capital, under a Christian veneer. The divine attributes of the imperial office were refashioned, with the emperor as God's representative. The palace was an imitation of heaven.Following the loss of the empire in the West and the Near East, the Palace in Constantinople was preserved - subject to the transition from Late Antique to Mediaeval conditions - until the Fourth Crusade, attracting the attention of Visgothic, Lombard, Merovingian, Carolingian, Norman and Muslim rulers. Renaissance princes later drew inspiration for their residences directly from ancient ruins and Roman literature, but there was also contact with the Late Byzantine court. Finally, in the age of Absolutism the palace became again an instrument of power in vast centralised states, with renewed interest in Roman and Byzantine ceremonial.Spanning the broadest chronological and geographical limits of the Roman imperial tradition, from the Principate to the Ottoman empire, the papers in the volume treat various aspects of palace architecture, art and ceremonial. ; URBS ist die erste internationale Reihe, die den aktuellen bauhistorischen und urbanistischen Fragen der Antiken Baugeschichte und Klassischen Archäologie ein spezielles Forum eröffnet. A modest zawiyah was established in İstanbul at the end of the 18th century.…This lodge, which developed over time and was referred to as "Mevlevîhâne der Bâb-i Cedîd" in certain Ottoman sources, ranked second following the Galata Mevlevi Lodge by its establishment date. This lodge, which however could not resist the impacts of time and only foundations and dilapidated buildings were left behind from its brilliant structure by the time we reached the 21st century, was the very same Yenikapi Mevlevi Lodge. With the repair and protection project conducted by Güryapi Restoration during 2005-2010, the Yenikapi Mevlevi Lodge did not only return to its past magisterial days, but also started to serve as an international education center within the organization of Fatih Sultan Mehmed Foundation University.The book titled "Yenikapi Mevlevîhanesi Restorasyonu 2005-2010", that has been published with over 250 photographs, archive documents and survey drawings and was prepared under the editorship of Prof. Dr. M. Baha Tanman, sheds light on the most comprehensive repair and protection process in the history of the Mevlevi Lodge and its history when it served as a science, wisdom and guidance center that has led the rearing of artists, composers and performers once upon a time.

French painter Émile Jean Horace Vernet, painter Charles Marie Bouton who is among the inventors of Diorama technique, and daguerreotypist Frédéric Auguste Antoine Goupil-Fesquet depart from the Port of Marseille in October 1839 to take photographs and return to Marseille six months later, in April 1840 passing from Livorno, Malta, Syros, Paros, Naxos, Santorini, Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor, Suez, Mount Sinai, Gaza, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Nablus, Sayda, Deir Al Qamar, Damascus, Tripoli, Baalbek, Beirut, Larnaca, Rhodes, Kos, Izmir, Dardanelles, Istanbul and Rome. Frédéric Auguste Antoine Goupil-Fesquet conveyed his impressions about this journey in his book, Voyage d'Horace Vernet en Orient that would be published in 1843. At the 180th anniversary of this first known group photography trip, the exhibition curated by Engin Özendes features the artists Coşkun Aral, Laleper Aytek, Ali Borovalı, Murat Germen, Sinan Koçaslan, Yusuf Sevinçli, Alp Sime, Lale Tara, Serkan Taycan and Cem Turgay. The photographs they took during their trips to the stops of the earlier journey reflect a contemporary take on these cities with rich histories.

Condición: New. The First World War played a critical role in shaping the transformation of the Ottoman people's relationship with the sea. Swimming in the sea, regarded as a matter of privacy, was considered wrong and even illegal for a long period. During the second half of the nineteenth century, the inhabitants of a watersid…e city like Istanbul had to make do with "sea baths" that were enclosed with wooden panels, despite the effect of Westernization. As secularism was embraced within the founding of the Republic, individuality would become socially visible and free, leading to a more intimate relationship with the sea. The change from sea baths to beaches was nothing less than a revolution. The White Russians escaping the Revolution in Russia caused numerous transformations in Istanbul, arguably the most important being beach habits that brought the people to the sea. The inhabitants of the city were quick to get used to beachgoing and the activity created its own forms of fun, fashion, and culture in time. Once the sea became part of urban life, Istanbul developed a unique sense of freedom as well. The golden era of beach culture lasted until the 1960s, after which the rapid sociological change in Istanbul took its toll. Editors: Translator: 431 pages.
