The engineering of the building by the architect Károly Dávid started in 1948 as part of the first Soviet-style Hungarian Three Year Plan. The stadium was built in the style of the socialist realism but still preserved some characters of international modernism due to the chief architect Dávid, who was member of the organisation CIAM (Congrès internationaux d'architecture moderne). The near 70,000 capacity building was built until 1953 with a large number of volunteers, including soldiers in order to keep the deadlines.
