Nederland heeft op elk terrein van kunsten en wetenschappen altijd intensief contact gehad met het buitenland. Zo ook in de architectuur. In de moderne tijd is bijvoorbeeld de Amerikaanse invloed van belang op het werk van architecten als Berlage (1856-1934) en Dudok (geb. 1884). Het is vooral de toepassing van de kubus als ruimtelijke structuur die zij van de Amerikanen hebben geleerd. Berlage en De Bazel (1869-1923) hebben ook belangstelling gehad voor bepaalde wetmatige verhoudingen en voor de monumentaliteit der Japanse, Egyptische en Assyrisch-Babylonische architectuur. Skandinavische invloed - in geest en in materiaalgebruik is te zien in werken van architecten uit de Delftse School. Hun architectuur (sinds 1924) wil uitdrukking geven aan sterk ethisch-religieus gerichte waarden. De boeiende colleges van de Delftse hoogleraar Granpré Molière hebben een groot aantal architecten beïnvloed. Zij worden tot de traditionalisten gerekend. Granpré Molière werd eens de 'denker' genoemd in tegenstelling tot de 'puur artiest' Rietveld.
