Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: None (as issued). 1st Edition. Signed on the title page by Robert Swope, Jr., the author, not personalized to anyone. 248 pages using nearly 300 previously unpublished photographs of U. S. Navy photographer John Marshall Riddle who spent two tours of duty in the Pacific War…from l942 to 1945. Ted Riddle is set apart because 14 years after his passing in 1978, his record of the war, that is, his accumulation of photographs, notes and military papers from the Pacific Theatre, was discovered just as he had left it a half a century ago. A great addition to a WWII buff's library. A very nice copy. Signed By the Author.

Hardcover. Condición: Near fine. First Edition, First Printing. Quarto. 8.5 x 10.25 in. Unpaginated. Fully illustrated with black & white and color reproductions of photographs. Near fine in original pictorial paper-covered boards with a touch of sunning to spine. Uncovered still in negative form in a New York flea market 50 yea…rs after being taken, Casa Susanna documents the eponymous popular getaway, also called Chevalier d'Eon, in the Catskills; a safe haven for transgender women and cross-dressing men run by Susanna Valenti and her wife Maria Tornell in the 1960s. Charging $25 for an inclusive stay, the resort hosted drag shows, cabaret performances, costume parties, as well as make-up lessons, garden parties, and game nights, all documented by resident photographer, Andrea Susan. Susan had her own developing studio to avoid commercial film developers reacting unfavorably to photos documenting the joy and daily life of Casa Susanna's guests during a time when cross-dressing was criminalized in the U.S. A wonderful, early example of gender affirmation in America.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition quarto hardcover in printed boards. Unpaginated with color + b/w photographic illustrations. Clean, internally unmarked, well bound. Ever so slightly askew, but hardly so and not effecting the integrity of binding or overall fell of the book. Very lightly rubbed at corn…ers, but hardly noticeable, with a bit of heavier rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards. Slight minimal shelfwear elsewhere to extremities, now protected in cut mylar. Photobook edited by Michel Hurst and Robert Swope, the latter who in the early 2000's found a box of photographs at a New York City flea market containing the work of Andrea Susan, official photographer of the weekend retreat Casa Susanna in Jewett, New York - a secret gathering place for cross-dressing men and trans women in the 50's-60's. Consisting of affirming, ordinary candid and portrait photos of visitors to the retreat in feminine attire in the midst of various social activities, the photographs were originally bestowed to Susan's mentor and later discarded before ending up at the flea market. These are early, rare examples of photographs made by and for trans women / cross dressing men for purposes beyond the fetishistic, erotic, and otherwise sensational. The publication of this book would eventually inspire actor, playwright and screenwriter Harvey Fierstein's play Casa Valentina, as well as to encourage some of the former attendees to come forward half a century later with their stories. A documentary about Casa Susanna, directed by Sébastien Lifshitz, was released in September 2022. Notwithstanding a heavy hand from the editors, this is a stunning, touching photobook. Rare and in very good condition.

Condición: Near Fine. 2011. First edition. Rizzoli, Hotel Il Pellicano & Violette Editions. New York & Italy. 2011. First edition. Hardback, quarto; beige cloth-bound boards, with illustrated paper-covered upper board. 240 pages. Illustrated throughout with b&w and colour photographs. English. 305x220mm. 1.5kg. Near fine; very s…light shelf wear. A photographic celebration of the Hotel Il Pellicano, the secluded, exclusive hotel at Porto Ercole, Italy. Three photographers - John Swope, Slim Aarons and Juergen Teller - have captured the glamour and dolce vita of this small area of seaside paradise at different times over the last century. John Swope's photos show the hotel's early beginnings between 1964 and 1971. In Slim Aarons' images (1967-1991) the place comes alive with the beautiful faces of the International jet set - the Borgheses, Corsinis, Puccis and Pignatellis. Juergen Teller captures the next generation at play at the Globetrotter's party in the Summer of 2009. Beaux Books specialises in fine and rare books on art and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. We welcome questions about our books and we are happy to provide any extra images. Buy with confidence from an experienced bookseller. Photographs by Slim Aarons, John Swope & Juergen Teller. (ilustrador).
