Light wear to corners and at top and bottom of spine. Previous owner's stamps to both front and rear pastedown endpapers. Number written in pen at the top of page 35. Otherwise a nice bright and clean copy. Binding started on page 16, next to plate, but is intact. Copy lacks the folding map.

Hinges a bit cracked, binding moderately worn and rubbed but still a good to very good copy of a book which, having entered the Travelling Library system, would have been much more likely to be subject to much use and abuse. The BC Travelling Library Service was a branch of the Provincial Legislative Library. Starting in 1898, the Library maintained a travelling library program, which sent small collections of fifty books to anywhere in the Province that required it. This included smaller communities without library service, schools, lighthouses, even ships at sea. Books were sent to communities that paid $6 for a case. It was believed to be the only service of its kind at the time in Canada. When the Public Library Commission was established in 1919 they took over this service; by that point almost two hundred travelling collections were in circulation.

Frontis illustration of Houghton, and 9 full-page plates within text, all with tissue guards. Two are interesting birds-eye views of Marquette, Michigan, in 1853 and 1875, respectively. Contains much on the early history of Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The author (1834-1909) was the publisher of the Mining Journal in Marquette until 1884, and later was appointed as Governor of the Territory of Alaska. Owner's name on front endpaper, no marks in book, binding tight. Light foxing, especially to tissue guards. Covers show some edge wear, corners bumped. Book condition VG-. Binding: HB. Edition: 4-5.
