The plaintiff , Luigi Parmeggiani, was a major collector of antiques and pictures who resided at 1 Bedford Square, Bloomsbury. According to the author, Parmeggiani had been one of the foremost figures amongst the anarchists and also acted as a 'fence' . After a four day hearing before Mr Justice Ridley and a special jury in the King's Bench Court, Parmeggiani was awarded damages of one farthing, but had to pay all John Sweeney's legal costs. An enlarged edition was published in December 1905 and included an additional chapter with a detailed report of the case of Parmeggiani v Sweeney and Others. Sweeney was born in 1857 to a farming family in Staigue, County Kerry. His family suffered eviction when he was two years old and emigrated to London in 1875. His brother, Michael F. Sweeney, emigrated to the USA and subsequently became the world record holder for the high jump, 'having cleared the bar at a height of six feet five and five-eighths inches.' In 1876 Sweeney joined the London Metropolitan Police and was posted to Hammersmith. In 1884 he moved to the Criminal Investigation Department at Scotland Yard and was assigned to the Special department (later known as the Special Branch), which had recently been established to counteract the growing threat of Fenian violence in the capital. In May of that year Sweeney had personal, 'nerve-shaking experience' of such violence when a bomb destroyed the Branch's offices at Scotland Yard. As a sergeant, Sweeney was also involved in curbing the frequently disruptive public clashes between Irish nationalists and unionists over Home Rule. He eventually rose to the rank of detective inspector and often acted as a bodyguard to members of the royal family and visiting foreign dignitaries. One of his 'most honourable calls of duty' came in 1900 when he was placed in charge of the special police protection unit that accompanied Queen Victoria on her visit to Ireland. On Queen Victoria's death, Sweeney, was entrusted to convey the Crown, Sceptre and Regalia from Windsor Castle to Messrs Garrard in London at King Edward's command in order that certain alterations should be made prior to his Coronation. Sweeney retired from the police force in 1903 and immediately set about writing his memoirs which the Police Commissioner, Sir Edward Henry, described as an "amazing indiscretion". At the time Sweeney joined Scotland Yard, the head of the Criminal Investigation Department was Mr Monro, with Chief Supt. Williamson as his second in command. Superintendent Swanson was an Inspector in CID at that time and Chief Inspector Frank Froest was a mere sergeant. The head of the Special Irish Branch under whom Sweeney served was Inspector Littlechild. The names of these police officers will be very familiar to those interested in the Whitechapel murders committed by Jack the Ripper. With the ownership inscription of Frederick Thomson (1864-1917), the prominent shipowner and newspaper proprietor in Dundee, Scotland. He played a pivotal role in the early development of the publishing giant now known as D.C. Thomson & Co. Ltd. He became a partner in the family publishing firm in 1888. He was instrumental in growing the circulation of titles like the Weekly News from 60,000 to over 300,000 by 1911. He died in 1917 at the age of 53. After his death, his brother David Couper Thomson took over his responsibilities within the company. He is buried in Dundee's Western Cemetery, where his grave is notably more elaborate than that of his more famous brother, David. …
