Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Victor Ambrus Ilustrador. First Edition. 1971. First edition. 75pp. including music, and in-text black and white illustrations by Victor Ambrus. Cædmon (fl. c. 657-684) is the earliest English poet whose name is known. He was a lay brother at the Abbey of Whitby, starting life as an illiterate cowherd. The sole source of original information about Cædmon's life and work is Bede's 'Historia ecclesiastica'. According to Bede, one evening, while the monks were feasting, singing, and playing a harp, Cædmon left early to sleep with the animals because he knew no songs. The impression given by St. Bede is that he lacked the knowledge of how to compose the lyrics to songs. While asleep, he had a divine vision which enabled him to create marvellous music and poetry for the rest of his life and to become known as 'the father of English poetry'. Arthur Scholey and Donald Swann have turned this story as told by Bede, into a musical drama, suitable for schoolroom, church or concert platform. Two speaking parts, one for the narrator and one for Caedmon, are interspersed with choral and instrumental passages for any number of participants. The book is bound in the original light mauve boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper is very good with some shelf wear and light soiling and some rubbing down the spine edges and to the spine ends.
