Geological Survey topographic coverage, shows cultural details (individual buildings, roads, railroads, etc.) in addition to soil types and distribution within the region, necessary for delineating important and desirable agricultural areas. Descriptions and characteristics of soil classifications shown on the map are provided in the report together with information about principal and lesser crops grown at the time of the survey. An early edition and possibly the first soil survey of Jefferson County. Later soil surveys provide more maps and finer details but lack the visual appeal, simplicity, and historical content of this earlier large color map. *** Condition: Complete as issued. Ex-library with ink stamp and call numbers on front wrapper, else the booklet is internally clean with no other markings. Removed from bound volume with roughness and chipping to wrappers along the bound edge, loose or detaching pages, and stitch holes along the left margin not affecting the map. Gray (1810-1889) who traveled to the Lapwai Mission in Lewiston, ID in 1836 where he was the Nez Perce secular agent, and she subsequently later married Jacob Kamm (1823-1912), pioneering Oregon steamship builder, industrialist, entrepreneur, and owner/operator of the Vancouver Transportation Co. An exceedingly scarce original Washington Territory stock certificate issued originally in 1874 at the capitalization of the Vancouver Transportation Co. Jacob Kamm was one of the largest owners of the Oregon Steam & Navigation Co. -- first organized in 1860, joined with James Gray to form this second transportation company, and acquired the George S. Wright, a steamship which operated in the coastal trade between Portland, Astoria, Victoria, and Sitka, Alaska. They then also added the steamship Carrie (only sailed until 1876) which Kamm had also constructed, and thereby formed the Vancouver Transportation Co. Jacob Kamm's son, Charles Tilton Kamm (1860-1906), was mate, master & pilot of several of the Kamm steamships on the Columbia & Lewis Rivers, including the Undine and Lurline who sailed the Portland, Vancouver, & Astoria route, and eventually became Superintendent of the Vancouver Transportation Co. & Lewis River Transportation Co., before dying suddenly of a stroke at 46.
