Ray's definitive history of the Kashmir Valley, covering the period from the earliest times up to the Muslim conquest in 1338 A.D. Based on the author's doctoral dissertation, the text remains one of the most thorough investigations into the regi…on's pre-Islamic civilization. Ray meticulously reconstructs the political history using the Rajatarangini of Kalhana as a primary framework, cross-referenced with Chinese travelogues (Hiuen Tsang, Ou-K'ong) and archaeological data. Key Themes: Cultural Synthesis: How Kashmir served as the "transmission hub" for Buddhism and Sanskrit learning between India and Central Asia/China. Social History: Insights into the caste structure, the position of women, and the daily life of the common people. Economic Conditions: Analysis of agriculture, trade routes, and coinage. Religion: The development of Kashmiri Shaivism and the status of Buddhism under different dynasties. Conditon is good overall however there are some ink notes and underlining in the text and the original owner's inscription on the endpaper. This book was printed in India in 1970 to the production standards of the era.

The scarce first edition of this scholarly work on the political evolution of Kashmir and the attendant cultural, religious and social developments of the Kashmiri people culled mainly from archaeological and…literary sources. A second edition was issued in 1970. Cloth is faintly foxed, some dust-soiling and foxing to top edge; the unclipped dust jacket well-preserved condition except for a small chunk missing along the top edge of the front panel.
