The volume deals with the crucial period from constitutional monarchy of Louis XVI (1789-91) to that of the early Revolution (1791-94) when the emblem changed from the white cross and the fleur-de-lys to the French national tricolor of blue-white-red for the infantry, provincial militia, artillery, Garde de Paris, Garde Nationale, and volunteers.
