Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The canonical 1977 American photobook returns to print in a new, definitive edition that most closely resembles the originalIn 1977, American photographers Larry Sultan (19462009) and Mike Mandel (born 1950) published a book of photographs titled Evidence. The book was the culmination of a two-year search through the archives of 77 government agencies, educational institutions and corporations, including General Atomic Company, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, the San Jose Police Department and the United States Department of the Interior. The original pictures were made as objective records of activities unfamiliar to the lay public: the scenes of crimes, aeronautical engineering tests, industrial experiments and other subjects. Sifting through some two million images, Mandel and Sultan assembled a careful sequence of 59 pictures. The book was thoughtfully designed to depict the photographs in terms of their "documentary" origins, unaccompanied by identifying captions. Faced with a world of mysterious events and unfathomable activities, the reader is confronted with only the sequential narrative imagery of the book and thus must actively participate in creating its meaning.Following a revised edition of the book in 2003 and a 2017 reprintboth of which sold out quickly and have become highly collectibleEvidence is back in print nearly 50 years after its initial publication. This new, definitive edition features revelatory new scansmany made from the original negativeswhich greatly enhance the eerie objectivity conveyed by the book's title. In many cases, the original negatives revealed that crops had been made to the image by the agencies; the complete images are restored here. The jacketless, library-style binding of the original 1977 edition is also restored, further underscoring its impersonal documentlike character and its canonical status. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Larry Sultan was one of the most important and celebrated photographers of the twentieth century, but his lifelong commitment to writing is less well known. Water Over Thunder is the first publication devoted to Sultan's wide-ranging use of writing as a personal, artistic, and pedagogic tool. The selected texts - many unpublished until now - come from Sultan's numerous journals and notebooks, encompassing reflections on his teaching and art practice, drafts for short stories, vivid dream diaries, and polished essays. Interspersed throughout are extracts from Sultan's eloquent public lectures and interviews, illuminating the questions he investigated throughout his life and emphasizing the thematic underpinnings of his best known series: Pictures from Home, Evidence (with Mike Mandel), and The Valley. Throughout these various writings, water appears as an important literal and metaphorical force. The book's title is derived from an early draft of Pictures from Home in which Sultan writes about the process of beginning a new artistic project: 'Everything is in motion, spinning off of surfaces and slamming against shadowy forms . it seems impossible to find a break in the surface.'This volume is illustrated throughout with previously unseen materials from Sultan's archive: marked contact sheets, outtakes, scouting shots, selections from his found photo collection, and layout pages from his book maquettes. As a whole, Water Over Thunder illuminates Sultan's extraordinary way of working and forms an intimate portrait of an artist thinking through his craft and the world around him in real time.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. 2nd Edition. First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan's pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan's own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work. Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of Pictures From Home clarifies the multiplicity of voices - both textual and pictorial - in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work. Emphasising the cinematic motion of the family's home videos, the Super-8 film stills have been newly digitised and magnified, with select scenes running full-bleed across double-page spreads. Meanwhile, Sultan's photographs of his parents as they go about their daily lives - against the quintessential backdrop of the Reagan-era American dream - are supplemented with previously unpublished images. Most significantly, the book honours Sultan as the oft-hailed 'King of Colour Photography'. "What drives me to continue this work is difficult to name. It has more to do with love than with sociology. With being a subject in the drama rather than a witness. And in the odd and jumbled process of working, everything shifts: the boundaries blur, my distance slips, the arrogance and illusion of immunity falters. I wake up in the middle of the night, stunned and anguished. These are my parents. From that simple fact, everything follows." - Larry Sultan. Larry Sultan (b. 1946, Brooklyn; d. 2009, California) grew up in California's San Fernando Valley, which became a source of inspiration for a number of his projects. His work blends documentary and staged photography to create images of the psychological as well as physical landscape of suburban family life. Sultan's work has been exhibited and published widely. Most recently, the Los Angeles County Museum presented a retrospective exhibition dedicated to Sultan. His photography is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Sultan served as a Distinguished Professor of Photography at California College of the Arts in San Francisco.
