"Johann Behrens, ein achtzehnjähriger Bauernknabe aus wedel, der bei dem Hofbesitzer Dierk Heil im kurzen Moor als Junge diente, ." Ludwig August Struve (1795-1828), namhafter Kliniker, wurde am 18. August 1795 als der fünfte (jüngste) Sohn des Gymnasialdirectors Jacob St. in Altona geboren. Nachdem er im Christianeum zu Altona unter Leitung seines Vaters eine ausgezeichnete Vorbildung erhalten, begab er sich 1811 nach Dorpat, woselbst zwei ältere Brüder, Karl (s. d.) als Gymnasiallehrer, Wilhelm (s. d.) als Studiosus der Astronomie, weilten; am 9. October 1811 wurde Ludwig St. als Stud. der Medicin immatriculirt. Bereits im nächsten Winter hatte der junge Mediciner Gelegenheit, sich praktisch thätig zu erweisen: er mußte von Anfang October 1812 bis zum Januar 1813 mit Karl Ernst v. Baer und andern Commilitonen an den Kriegslazarethen der Stadt Riga ärztliche Dienste verrichten. Nachdem er noch ein Jahr in Dorpat studirt hatte, reiste er gleichzeitig mit Professor Burdach, der einem Ruf nach Königsberg Folge leistete, am 12. Februar 1814 von Dorpat ab, um in der Heimath seine Studien zu beendigen. Er wandte sich nach Kiel und wurde hier nach Vertheidigung seiner Dissertation ("Diss. exhibens insignem casum rupturae uteri post mortem puerperae demum ex sectione cognitae" Kiliae 1815, 50 pp. 4°) zum Doctor der Medicin und Chirurgie promovirt. Dann ließ er sich in Elmshorn nieder und lebte daselbst als praktischer Arzt, bis er 1823 einen Ruf als Professor der Therapie und Director der medicinischen Klinik in Dorpat erhielt. Dem Ruf leistete er Folge, und trat am Anfang des Jahres 1824 sein Lehramt [691] an, doch nur kurze Zeit sollte es ihm vergönnt sein, hier zu wirken; bereits am 17. April 1828 - erst 33 Jahre alt - schied er nach kurzem Krankenlager aus diesem Leben. Struve ist litterarisch außerordentlich thätig gewesen; er hat außer einer großen Anzahl von Recensionen und Nachrichten in Rust und Casper's Repertorium der gesammten Heilkunde, mehrere Abhandlungen in den Schleswig-Holstein'schen Provinzial-Berichten, sowie in Rust's Magazin für die gesammte Heilkunde verfaßt. Insbesondere hat er der Marschkrankheit seine Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt; hiemit beschäftigen sich mehrere Aufsätze in Zeitschriften, sowie eine Monographie: "Ueber die aussatzartige Krankheit Holsteins, allgemein daselbst Marschkrankheit genannt. Ein Beitrag zur Kenntniß der pseudosyphilitischen Uebel" (Altona 1820, VIII, 208 S. 8°). Ferner veröffentlichte er: "Ueber Diät-, Entziehungs- und Hungercuren in eingewurzelten chronischen, namentlich syphilitischen und pseudosyphilitischen Krankheiten. Ein Beitrag zur Therapie der chronischen Krankheiten" (Altona 1822, 125 S. 4°. Mit zwei illumin. Tafeln); "Commentatio de Phlegmasia alba dolente" (Tübingen 1825, 111 S.); "Ueber die Kenntniß und Cur acuter und chronischer Krankheiten" (Riga und Dorpat 1827, 442 S. 8°); "Historischer Bericht über die Leistungen der medicin. Klinik der K. Universität zu Dorpat" (1827, 116 S.). - Nach Struve's Tode erschien: "Synopsis morborum cutaneorum secundum classes, genera, species et varietates. Uebersicht der Hautkrankheiten nach ihren Classen, Gattungen, Arten und Varietäten" (Berlin 1829, XII und 107 gr. Bogen nebst 4 ill. Tafeln). St. hat auch dichterische Anlagen bekundet, er verfaßte ein Gedicht: "Vergangenheit und Zukunft", und trug dasselbe im großen Hörsaal der Universität zu Dorpat am 12.
