Josef Stránský was a Czech conductor, composer, and art collector/dealer who moved to the United States and conducted the New York Philharmonic from 1911 to 1923. This programme (8pps) is from one of his earliest concerts at Carnegie Hall, featuring Mischa Elman, violinist in an all Tchaikovsky programme. The next concert up featured the great pianist Josef Hofmann playing Beethoven. W. H. Humiston wrote the notes. Tickets to hear the NYP went from 50 cents to $2, students= 25c. The list of box holders includes names of New York's wealthiest of the time: Villard, Wanamaker, Loew, Morgenthau, Osborn, Harriman, Lewisohn, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer, Riker, Rockefeller, Schirmer, etc. Surnames of orchestra members suggest over 40% were Jewish.
