This is an autobiographical account taken from the journal and letters of Jacob D. B. Stillman (1819-1888), an American surgeon and personal physician to Leland Stanford. He later left the medical profession and became a viticulturist and settled near Redlands, California. Stillman recounts the arduous 194-day journey he and ninety-six other passengers had taken aboard the ship Pacific from New York to San Francisco. He writes of the unpredictable and, at times, unrelenting and dangerous weather, passengers struggling with seasickness, an abusive captain who withheld food and medical aid from passengers, and generally miserable conditions on board during their journey. However, Stillman also notes moments of joy and levity such as seeing rare fish and visiting scenic locales in South America. Foreword by Kenneth M. Johnson. Notably, Johnson writes that there was only one woman, a ship owner's wife, on board during the journey and that the average age of the passengers was only 26 years old. The passengers, including Stillman, pressed charges against the captain in Rio de Janeiro. Front colophon: "This edition is limited to 1,950 copies. This is Number 1266.".…

Binding is tight. Dust jacket is clean and intact overall but has smudges, a few stains, and light age toning. A Fine book in a Very Good custom dust jacket. This book contains the printed text of an autobiographical account originally written by Jacob D. B. Stillman (1819-1888), an American surgeon and personal physician to Leland Stanford. He later left the medical profession and became a viticulturist and settled near Redlands, California. In his account, Stillman recollects his long and harrowing journey from San Francisco back to his original home on the East Coast from 1850-1851 using a route that took him through Nicaragua and over land and sea. His account begins in San Francisco and concludes in Key West. Stillman appears to have run a successful medical practice in California, but his ailments of fever and jaundice, which he overcame, and a cholera outbreak in San Francisco were likely reasons why he chose to leave. This outbreak, as well as the limited space aboard steamers, were also factors in his decision to take the Nicaragua route instead of the typical route around Cape Horn. The general path of Stillman's journey involved traveling by ship from San Francisco to Realejo port, Nicaragua; canoeing upriver to the town of Realejo; an overland trip via horseback; two failed attempts to cross Lake Nicaragua via canoe; using a schooner to finally traverse Lake Nicaragua; another canoe trip; boarding the poorly-manned brig Mechanic; and sailing aboard the Polly Hinds to finally reach Baltimore. Stillman vividly writes about many details of his journey. Among the other subjects Stillman writes about are an amicable whale that followed one of the ships he boarded, deaths on the journey and burials at sea, Cosaquina volcano, day-to-day events on his overland journeys in Central America with different travel parties, Chichigalpa, Lake Managua, beautiful scenery and animals in Central America, interactions with local residents, buying a macaw, eating monkey, Momotombo volcano, San Juan, Old Providence Island, rescuing survivors of the Martha Sanger wreck, contending with abuses by officers of the Mechanic, the incompetency of two captains of the Mechanic, discussions of mutiny, accidentally eating the poisonous manchineel fruit, and arriving in Key West. After his arduous journey back to the East Coast, Stillman actually returned to California in 1856 in part due to the socioeconomic opportunities in that state. Foreword by John Barr Tompkins. Back colophon: "The book was designed by the publisher, printed by George Waters of San Francisco, and bound by Filmer Brothers--Taylor & Taylor of San Francisco. The typeface for the text, picture captions and chapter summaries is Linotype Monticello, composed by Dayton Typographic Service of Dayton, Ohio. The display typefaces are Figgins Long Primer and Bulmer, hand set. The paper is Curtis Rag. The cloth is Bolton buckram, made by Columbia Mills. This edition was limited to 2,350 copies.".…

From colophon, "This edition was limited to 2,350 copies". Jacob David Babcock Stillman (1819-1888) was a physician who first migrated to California in 1849. While there, he co-founded the first hospital in California, located in Sacramento. Suffering from jaundice and fever in San Francisco in 1850, he longed for home.
