Front free endpaper shows light age-toning at the edges typical of the period. The book was occasioned by the death of Patricia Garvan, the young daughter of Francis P. Garvan (then president of the Chemical Foundation), from rheumatic fever; it is dedicated "to the welfare of your children and your children's children," and the frontispiece carries her portrait under the caption "May the memory of lost children urge us on."
