This is nice original pen & ink Artwork drawing, probably done by Archibald Stevenson Forrest (A.S. Forrest), 1869-1963. Depicting the British explorer John Hanning Speke at the moment he first sighted Lake Victoria (then referred to as Victoria Nyanza) in 1858. This moment was a major milestone in the European "Search for the Source of the Nile." Speke was the first European to reach the lake's shores, and he correctly (though controversially at the time) identified it as the primary reservoir for the Nile River. The artwork was done for the 1908 book "Our Empire Story: Stories of India and the Greater Colonies" by H. E. Marshall. The artwork is on thick art card measuring 10.5 inches by 7.5 inches approx. Some marking to the edges else in good general condition. This is a lighter item, shipping overseas costs will be reduced accordingly at checkout.

Depicting a pivotal diplomatic encounter from the history of African exploration: James Bruce meeting the King of Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The central figure standing with his back to the viewer is the Scottish explorer James Bruce, who travelled through North Africa and Ethiopia between 1768 and 1773 in search of the source of the Blue Nile. He is shown presenting himself to the young King of Abyssinia, Tekle Haymanot II, who sits on the throne. The meeting was crucial because it allowed Bruce the protection and freedom he needed to explore the Ethiopian highlands and eventually reach the "fountains" of the Blue Nile in 1770. The artwork was done for the 1908 book Our Empire Story: Stories of India and the Greater Colonies by H. E. Marshall. The artwork is done on thick art card measuring 10.5 inches by 7.5 inches approx. Forrest), 1869-1963. Depicting the tragic end of English explorer Henry Hudson, based on the events of his final voyage in 1611. The artwork was done for the 1908 book "Our Empire Story: Stories of India and the Greater Colonies" by H. E. Marshall. The Scene: The Abandonment of Henry Hudson illustrates the moment Hudson, his teenage son John, and several loyal or sick crew members were cast adrift in a small open boat in what is now Hudson Bay, Canada. The bearded man at the tiller is Henry Hudson himself, looking back toward his ship, the Discovery. After a brutal winter trapped in ice, the crew mutinied. They forced Hudson and the others into the boat with few supplies, then sailed away, leaving them to perish in the Arctic waters. The artist, A.S. Forrest, uses sharp line work to emphasize the desolate icebergs in the background and the huddled, defeated posture of the abandoned men. In H.E. Marshall's Our Empire Story, this image accompanies the chapter titled "The Adventures of Henry Hudson." It serves as a dramatic conclusion to the story of his search for the Northwest Passage. No trace of Hudson or his companions was ever found, making this one of the most famous mysteries in the history of exploration. the handwritten title at the bottom ("Hudson's Last Voyage") was used as a reference for the book's typesetters. the artwork is done on thick art card measuring 10.5 inches by 7.5 inches approx. Some marking to the edges else in good general condition. This is a lighter item, shipping overseas costs will be reduced accordingly at.

Cabot sailed from Bristol, England, under a commission from King Henry VII, and is credited with being the first European since the Vikings to land on the North American mainland. It shows the Discovery of Newfoundland. Cabot called the land he found "new-found-land," The artwork was done for the 1908 book "Our Empire Story: Stories of India and the Greater Colonies" by H. E.
