Datelined July 1893 in Sacramento, California. 6 3/4" x 8 1/2." Billhead is very clean and intact overall. Paper has a center horizontal fold line at center. Small spot at the top not affecting text or h…andwriting. Two pinholes not affecting text or handwriting. Tiny chip at the right edge. Small black and white illustration in the upper-left corner shows the storefront, possibly in Old Sacramento, California, with horse-drawn carts and people walking around or working. Text over the illustration says, "Incorporated August 28th 1882." The handwritten portions include the name of the buyer, the item(s)/service(s) purchased, and the price of the item(s)/service(s). The buyer was "V.[?] Kendal." Items/service(s) are written on four lines of the receipt and include "Coal Grate," "Setting up Range," a pipe, and "Brass Collar." The printed text reads, "[Buyer name] Bought of Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson, Importers & Dealers in Stoves, Metals, Tinware, Pumps, Iron Pipe, House Furnishing Goods & Tinners Trimmings; Jobbing of every description done to order. Nos. 221 & 223 J Street." In the lower-right corner in small printed text is the following, which identifies the company that lithographed the billhead: "Dickman-Jones Co. Lith. S.F." Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson was an importer of hardware, stoves, and plumbing supplies originally founded by Charles Holbrook, John Merrill, and James B. Stetson. It is known that Holbrook and Merrill originally came from New Hampshire and Maine, respectively, and began work in Sacramento. Stetson has his own company called James B. Stetson & Company which merged in 1878 with another to form Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson. Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson eventually became one of the most prominent hardware stores in San Francisco and remained in business until the 1950s.

Fibre [Haled?] Brushes." The October memorandum has eight line items with numerical figures and "wire" in their descriptions. Numerical figures are in the right columns on both memoranda. The printed header on each memorandum reads, "In Account with Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson, 221 and 223 J Street, between Second and Third."
