Omar Khayyám (18 May 1048 - 4 December 1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet. [Rendered into English Verse by Edward FitzGerald (31 March 1809 - 14 June 1883)]. Illustrated by Stephen Gooden [Stephen Frederick Gooden R.A., R.E., C.B.E. (born Tulse Hill, London, 9 October 1892, died Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire 21 September 1955) was an English artist, engraver and illustrator. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1933 and a Fellow of the Royal Academy in 1946].

An attractive two volume deluxe edition of the Fables of La Fontaine, sensitively illustrated by the often underrated Stephen Gooden, most renowned perhaps for this work and his contribution to the Nonesuch Press Holy Bible (1925-27); he was also a prolific bookplate designer and even had banknote designs taken up by the Bank of England in the 1930s & '50s. The translator Edward Marsh was a well-known patron of literature and the arts, most notably for his recognition and support of the World War I poet Rupert Brooke, to whom this edition is dedicated. The trade edition of the same was issued in 1933, comprising only twelve plates.

The Fables of Jean de La Fontaine represent a pinnacle of 17th-century French literature, blending classical influences with sharp social commentary. Drawing inspiration from Aesop, Phaedrus, and Eastern traditions, La Fontaine crafted fables that were formally elegant, morally instructive, and richly allegorical. First published in multiple volumes between 1668 and 1694, the fables use animals and rural settings to satirize the court, critique human folly, and subtly question the power structures of Louis XIVâs absolutist regime. Their stylistic refinement, vivid characterizations, and rhythmic verse made them not only a cornerstone of French literary education but also a touchstone for Enlightenment thinkers who admired their wit and ethical nuance.

Aesop's Fables, or the Aesopica, is a collection of fables credited to Aesop, a slave and storyteller believed to have lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BCE. Of diverse origins, the stories associated with his name have descended to modern times through a number of sources and continue to be reinterpreted in different verbal registers and in popular as well as artistic media. The fables originally belonged to the oral tradition and were not collected for some three centuries after Aesop's death. By that time, a variety of other stories, jokes and proverbs were being ascribed to him, although some of that material was from sources earlier than him or came from beyond the Greek cultural sphere.

Vellum with a little natural yellowing and a couple of smal…l nicks and other imperfections, but the contents pristine. This is a beautiful, limited edition of Irish novelist George Moore's controversial retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, illustrated by Stephen Gooden. First published in 1916, the novel was nearly banned for blasphemy, and encouraged Moore (1852-1933) to publish his future works in limited editions. The copper engravings of Gooden (1892-1955) are among the most beautiful book illustrations of his day. Horne says that he was a "literary" artist who was sensitive to the form of the book, aware of the possibilities of its page for decoration, and able "to appreciate the quality of the books he illustrated." He had "an imaginative grasp of the subject matter, and his witty and elegant illustrations are finely engraved and inventive in design." The present work is in excellent condition, and signed by both the artist and the writer. No. 8 OF 375 COPIES, SIGNED by Stephen Gooden and George Moore.
