This was a special issue dedicated to the question 'Whose Vision : Asian Settler Colonialism in Hawai'i.'The article constitutes an advocacy of Native Hawaiian sovereignty and talks about the growing tensions between Asians and Native Hawaiians in Hawai'i. Trask believes that settler organizations, such as the JACL, intentionally obscure the issue of justice for Hawaiians by stirring up hatred against native leaders. She bases her analysis of the question of Asian/Japanese 'alleged support' of the sovereignty movement on the JACL's reaction to her sister Mililani Trask's claim that Senator Daniel Inouye controlled the sovereignty process by giving available funds only to his favorites, who are against Native Hawaiian sovereignty. The JACL, the Democratic Party, and the Honolulu dailies, so Trask, teamed up to attack her sister back, thereby obscuring her whole analysis of the real issue. Opponents of Hawaiian sovereignty accuse Native Hawaiians of 'going down the race road,' but Trask believes that this is just a means of hiding the real race issue, namely the Japanese's desire to keep their power.

(Lewis,1993: iii) - Jimmie Hill s opinion on English as a school subject is one of the simplest put but most accurate views I have ever come across so far. In this short phrase lies far more than one would imagine at first sight. Its explicit message is, of course, that grammar is a feature of great value for a student learning English and I would never contradict that. However, reading and thinking about this short sentence one comes to understand that there must be far more than that to really be able to communicate in English. In his list of principles Michael Lewis puts it as follows: 'Successful language is a wider concept than accurate language.' (Lewis, 1993: vi)That means that in order to communicate not only grammatical competence is required but that there are other factors which need to be considered when teaching English. A student learning a great amount of grammar will not be able to communicate in English if he isn t, for instance, able to communicate at all, no matter if in his mother tongue or in the language he is newly acquiring because 'socio - linguistic competence - communcative power - precedes and is the basis, not the product of grammatical competence.' (Lewis, 1993: vii) As a consequence, a teacher of English (for Germans) can t only teach grammar to his students and expect them to be able to fluently and correctly speak English but he or she (I will in the following stick to the masculine form only) is also obliged to keep in mind various long - term aims which cannot be checked on in the form of a test or an essay. Here arises the question about what a teacher of English might want to know about linguistics in order to provide students with the best conditions for successfully communicating in English especially outside the classroom situation. In which way and to what extent should a teacher make use of his linguistic knowledge though Should students be made familiar with linguistic theories Will it be sufficient if a teacher is aware of these theories and lets them slip into his teaching in class on a secondary basis Or should he just forget about linguistics at all because it is too complicated a field to be used in teaching English to high school students.

But in favor of men, I claim that men are not really guilty either because society has become autonomous and cannot be controlled anymore.The basis for my thesis is Gretchen Cline s essay entitled 'The Impossibility of Getting Out - The Psychopolitics of the family in Marsha Norman s Getting Out' which contains feminist, psychoanalytic and existential frameworks to show Arlene Holsclaw s oppression within a family that parallels the institutions that bind her. Cline herself uses Walter Davis theory of the 'crypt' to analyze Arlene s familial and the subsequent social scapegoating in order to show how women are shaped by a society in which the most moral institutions, such as family and religion, justify violation and oppression.

The term 'watershed' refers to a turning pointin history. Examples are the Great Depression in the 1930s, World War Two in the 1940s,the Cold War beginning in the 1950s, the Civil Rights Movements in the US (and Third WorldLiberation Movements, their international counterparts) beginning in the 1960s, the downfallof communism and the rise of terrorism in the 1980s, and 9/11 in 2001. Those watershedshave had political, social and economic consequences on different groups and in differentspheres, ranging from local to global dimensions.Japanese Americans and their position in American society were effected by all thosewatershed events. Western Colonialism in Asia envisioned the Japanese as the primitive'Other' of the modern United States1. After having opened Japan by force in 1853, the USwelcomed Japanese immigrants for a short time as a cheap source of labor. Long before theGreat Depression hit the United States, however, anti-Japanese American sentiment, whichwas due to racial hatred and supposed economic competition, grew bigger and bigger,culminating in the Oriental Exclusion Act of 1924. During the Second World War, JapaneseAmericans residing primarily on the West Coast were put into internment camps. Dubbed a'military necessity,' this internment of approximately 110.000 persons of Japanese ancestry,a majority of whom were American citizens, was, in reality, solely triggered by racial hatred.In the 1950s, during the Cold War, Japan, as Asia's only democracy, switched roles withCommunist China and became an ally of the United States. This had immediateconsequences on the attitude towards Japanese Americans in the US. The Civil Rights Movement and the Third World Liberation Movements were closely linked to the Cold War inthat of all the anti-communist countries, the United States was the only one which had notbeen economically ruined by the preceding war. Thus, the United States was expected to bethe guardian of democracy and had to live up to its proclaimed ideals of equality andfreedom. The Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement gave Asian Americans in general,and Japanese Americans in particular, unprecedented opportunities, such as electoralempowerment, the repeal of exclusion laws, and to a certain extent social mobility. When I speak of Americans or whites, I donot, at any rate, mean everyone living in America whose skin is white but everyone whohas bought into the media's portrayal of Chinese Americans and the stereotypes existingin America, in other words, everyone believing in a white supremacist ideology. Likewise,when I speak of Chinese Americans, I do not mean all Chinese Americans reunited but acertain part of the Chinese American population who will react in the way I describe. Allthis does not take into consideration the more and more complex composition ofChinese America.Some of what I will claim applies to other minorities, as well, especially to other groupsof Asian heritage that have united with Chinese Americans under the umbrella term'Asian Americans.' This term, coined by the late Japanese American scholar YujiIchioka, homogenizes various groups of different Asian descent and does not take intoaccount their respective historical, cultural, political or other background. They haveunited in order to fight for certain clearly defined political issues that concern all ofthem, such as anti-Asian violence, racism, etc. White supremacists are probablyunaware of this political coalition anyways, due to their racist view that all Asians arealike.

La part de l ombre joue un rôletrès important dans le monde littéraire japonais. Plus qu une action de plus en plusprogressive l écrivain japonais se sert des implicites de tous niveaux pour créer unmonde esthétique dans laquelle on s immerge en lisant.L art japonaise est pleine d images et d allusions qu il faut déchiffrer pour que l onpuisse vraiment l apprécier. Il faut faire des efforts pour comprendre la significationinvisible et éloignée de l apparence imminente.Au Japon de l ère Edo naquit un style d art populaire du nom d Ukiyo-e. Il s agit desimages bonnes marchées montrant des scènes de la vie quotidienne qu on appelait lemonde flottant. Ce terme émergea d un jeu de mots ironique sur le terme bouddhiquepour le monde matériel, le « monde attristant ». D après Le Petit Robert l adjectifflottant est utilisé pour désigner quelque chose qui n est pas fixe, qui ne s applique, nes arrête à rien de précis. Comme contraires sont cités « assuré », « fixe », « précis »,« résolu », « sûr ».Dans la littérature japonaise s est développé un style d écriture qu on appelle L écritureflottante. D après Donald Keene, le premier à plaider qu on se serve de la suggestioncomme principe esthétique, c était Kenkô. Celui-ci n était pas le créateur de cespréférences mais Kenkô était le premier à en faire un principe explicite. Il niait l idéal del Occident visant un point culminant tout en favorisant l idéal japonais se concentrantplutôt sur les débuts suggérant ce qui va arriver aussi bien que les fins récapitulant cequi s est passé. C est ainsi que l imagination se libère et surmonte les faits en tant quetels jusqu à un point où elle touche les limites de la capacité du lecteur.

Die japanische Literatur steht in einer langen Tradition und zieht seit langem Leser aus dem Westen in ihren Bann. Fragt man einen auf dem Gebiet der Japanologie eher unbewanderten Zeitgenossen, was er mit dem Begriff ¿japanische Literatur¿ assoziiert,so stehen die Namen der Nobelpreisträger Kawabata Yasunari und Ôe Kenzaburô an erster Stelle. Möglicherweise, sofern sich der Befragte schon etwas näher mit dem Thema befasst hat, erhält man den Namen Natsume ôseki als Antwort oder, vor allem wenn es sich um einen jüngeren Leser handelt, Yoshimoto Banana. Fragt man ganz konkret nach Literatur aus dem ¿mittelalterlichen¿ Japan1, so bekommt man vermutlich allenfalls das Genji Monogatari angeboten. Die Ausbeute an Antworten auf eine solche Frage ist auf alle Fälle sehr begrenzt. Abgesehen von diesen mehr oder minder allgemein bekannten Autoren gibt es jedoch einen verhältnismäßig kleinen Kreis von japanischen Autoren, die im Westen ebenfalls mehrfach übersetzt worden sind und werden. Zu diesem Kreis gehört auch Akutagawa Ryûnosuke, dessen 1921 verfasste Kurzgeschichte Yabu no Naka auf eine in dem im 12.
