In January 1968, he was sent to Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah, where chemical and biological weaponry was stockpiled, staying there until July 1968. Steinberg was involved in helping to clean up the worst nerve gas disaster in American history on 13 March 1968. As a result, he volunteered to serve in Vietnam from 4 September 1968 to 24 March 1970.
