Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 67 pages with black and white photographs . Square Octavo (8 1/2' x 7 1/4") bound in original publisher's quarter grey loth with silver lettering to spine over white boards lettered in silver in original pictorial jacket. First published in 1930. The First Picture Book: Everyday Things for Babies is a landmark 1930 children's book conceived and prepared by Mary Steichen Calderone (published under her married name at the time, Mary Steichen Martin) featuring 24 exquisite photographs by her father, the legendary photographer Edward Steichen. At the time, Mary Steichen Calderone was a leader in the progressive school movement. She designed the book specifically to aid infants and toddlers in recognizing, naming, and connecting with familiar objects from their daily environments. It stands as one of the very first children's picture books to be illustrated entirely with photographs, breaking away from traditional drawings and fairy-tale illustrations of the era. Edward Steichen's images focused on beautiful, clean, and unadorned close-ups of simple objects—such as a glass of milk, a slice of bread, a teddy bear, keys, and shoes. These are widely considered some of his most appealing yet lesser-known works. Though it was out of print for decades, the book's artistic and historical value led to a celebrated reissue in 1991 by the Library Fellows of the Whitney Museum of American Art. This special edition—and subsequent trade editions published by Fotofolio—preserved the original photographs and preface while adding an afterword by renowned author John Updike. Condition. Corners gently bumped with some edge wear. Jacket with some edge wear else very good in like jacket.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Limited edition. Number 188 of the first 500 copies, a portfolio in original slip case with 12 loose photogravure plates, 5 of which are images of New York, including the iconic Flatiron Building. Steichen's Flatiron reflects his training as a painter; he photographed the building at dusk in winter, from the west side of Madison Square Park. The tree branches in the foreground move the eye down to the rain soaked street, and the outline of a carriage driver. Steichen's image immortalized the Flatiron. Includes three additional ephemeral items: 1. The folding printed prospectus; 2. An invitation to buy letter from Aperture; and 3. An original invoice with purchase price in 1982 of $1250. The texts are written by Beaumont Newhall & Mary Steichen Calderone and are signed by both authors at the text end . The photogravure plates with tissue guards include: Grand prix at Longchamp, after the races. Paris, 1907 -- Self-portrait with sister. Milwaukee, 1900 -- Torso. Paris, 1902 -- Moonrise. Mamaroneck, New York, 1904 -- In memoriam. New York, 1902 -- Steichen and wife Clara on their honeymoon. Lake George, New York, 1903 -- Richard Strauss. New York, 1904 -- The Flatiron. New York, 1905 -- Heavy roses. Voulangis, France, 1914 -- Isadora Duncan at the portal of the Parthenon. Athens, 1920 -- Three pears and an apple. France, c. 1921 -- Brancusi in his studio. One of 250 copies Signed by Updike and Calderone. Original photogravure by Steichen bound in, as well as another print of the same image in a folder. Additionally Inscribed by Updike: "for Herb a tasty item with every good wish, John 1/28/92." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association.…
