Focused on architectural masterpieces of the distant past from the Gothic or Baroque periods, or on contemporary modern architecture with its cold detachment and dimensions overshadowing its surroundings, we often overlook dozens, even hundreds, of exceptionally interesting buildings with richly decorated portals, window cornices, friezes, rustication, and volute gables. In the ornamental niches and on the gables of these buildings are statues, their walls adorned with sgraffito or paintings. Their dimensions are based on human scale, and their purpose is to serve daily life and please the eye of every passerby. Even monumental structures built during this period, which each of us knows and claims as our own - the National Theatre, Rudolfinum, National Museum, as well as Palacky Bridge or the Industrial Palace at the Prague Exhibition Grounds - are adapted to human scale. We are talking about a time of extraordinary urban, architectural, and technical boom in Prague, a time of a crucial stage in its transformation from a provincial city of the Austrian monarchy into a bustling, pulsating metropolis of a newly awakened nation, brimming with self-confidence and cultural and economic power. Indeed, the population of Prague and its suburbs almost doubled during the second half of the 19th century, reaching two hundred thousand. Population growth and economic boom necessitated the construction of new bridges, roads, modern street transport, railways, and railway stations. The need for education for ever wider segments of the population necessitated the construction of primary, secondary, and higher schools. Growing national self-confidence led to the founding of associations, the construction of Sokol halls and burgher's clubs, as well as town halls, financial institutions, and banks. The gradual transformation of the relationship to historical monuments of the past was also a reflection of national self-awareness. The construction of the National Theatre, National Museum, and other cultural facilities became a symbol of the nation's cultural strength, while the Great Jubilee Exhibition in 1891 symbolized its growing economic power. The purpose of this book is to guide the reader through Prague of the 1860s to 1880s and acquaint them with its transformations, as captured in illustrations and texts from contemporary Czech illustrated magazines Zlata Praha, Kvety, and Svetozor. Here we will encounter not only depictions of streets and buildings but also the inhabitants of the capital of the Czech Kingdom. Many illustrations, both intentionally and incidentally, depict their daily lives, others annual festivities or holidays, while some vividly describe extraordinary events associated with various celebrations or mourning events; a special section is also dedicated to disasters that affected the inhabitants of Prague during the period under review. The context of awakening national self-confidence permeates many of the depicted and described themes. An integral part of the aforementioned magazines were illustrations depicting certain objects and monuments that bear or bore witness to the distant past of the historical city. Our publication also includes contemporary walks around the then historical Prague towns, which today form an integral part of Greater Prague.
