This work, an edition of the Norman exchequer rolls, was "his most important literary work.which 150 years later remains the authoritative edition of these important twelfth-century records" (ODNB). Volume I contains "the Roll of 1180, the fragment of the Roll of 1184 (being all that is extant of the reign of Henry II) and the earlier Roll of Richard I [1195]." Volume 2 contains "the later Roll of Richard I (1198) and the detached membranes of Rolls of the time of King John [1201-1203]." Each volume also contains "Observations on the Great rolls of the Exchequer of Normandy" with full indexes. (A projected general index of persons and places was never published.) The work was later reprinted in the Memoires de la Societe des antiquaires de Normandie, Vols. XV-XVI (Paris, 1845-52).
