Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. Illustrations by Blair Hughes-Stanton Ilustrador. 1st Edition. The first National Mark recipe book was published in 1934, this is a cookery booklet, published in a different improved format in 1936. Beige soft covers. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of covers and spine, some slight overall yellowing, corners slightly bent, no price, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 128pp, illustrated. Published just before WWII, 'The National Mark' was a series of Government trademarks assuring quality and that the food concerned was British produced. This booklet explains the various quality control marks (mostly still in use today), and gives simple and easily explained recipes on a month by month basis. I tried the Cucumber Cream Soup (June), although I used slightly less butter and no egg than the recipe calls for, it was delicious. Ambrose Heath (born Francis Geoffrey Miller,1891-1969), was a journalist and food writer who wrote for 'The Times','The News Chronicle' and 'The Manchester Guardian', before becoming the food writer for 'The Morning Post'. Journalist, author and broadcaster Dorothy Cottington-Taylor (1891-1944), was Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute, which she led for 16 years, she made it a trusted source of accurate product reviews and dependable dishes in the UK. It also made her famous, a nationally known figure as she also used it as a platform to build her own brand, presenting radio programmes, promoting a wide range of products and taking on company directorships in the hospitality sector. Sadly she died towards the end of the War, at the young age of 53. A scarce and interesting book.

Añadir al carritoLittle information could be found about the author of the present work. Born Jessie Mein (1861-1941) in Liverpool, she later married Frank Stanton Carey, a professor of mathematics at University of Liverpool who published several undergraduate textbooks. Mr. and Mrs. Carey had four sons, one of whom, Richard, studied at Cambridge, became a schoolmaster, and eventually authored A School Algebra. The present title was likely Mrs. CareyÕs only published work. Octavo. viii, 175 pp. PublisherÕs blue cloth boards with blue title. One gathering slightly loose. A very good copy. First edition. Rare: OCLC lists only four copies in American libraries A Profession for Gentlewomen instructs women on creating attractive and well-run homes, therefore improving the conditions of their lives. The foreword states that the book is intended for Ògentlewomen with modest incomes.Ó Chapters range from ÒThe Woman and the House,Ó ÒA Chapter on Maids,Ó to ÒLaundry and Dish-washing.Ó In the conclusion, Carey explains her main purpose for the book: the emancipation of women within the domestic sphere. ÒI dream of a time when it will be as difficult to find a bad house as it is now to find a good one, and when the life of sordid drudgery now imposed on millions of women will be an impossibility.Ó See St. Andrews ÒMaths HistoryÓ page on Frank Stanton Carey.

Añadir al carritoself paper wrappers. 4to. self paper wrappers. 7 pages. Republished from the Index, Boston. Caption title, text presented in two columns; unopened and in fine condition. The only separate printing of this essay, which first appeared in the Boston periodical, the Index, 1885. In it, Stanton concludes: "We do not burn the bodies of women to-day; but we humiliate them in a thousand ways, and chiefly by our theologies. So long as the pulpits teach woman's inferiority and subjection, she can never command that honor and respect of the ignorant classes needed for her safety and protection. There is nothing more pathetic in all history than the hopeless resignation of woman to the outrages she has been taught to believe are ordained by God." OCLC locates copies at just two institutions (New York Historical Society; Wisconsin Historical Society; OCLC 6898449). Not in LCOC, or Schlesinger Library online catalogue. Stanton's The Woman's Bible, first published in 1895 (and of which far more copies are recorded than Stanton's Christian Church and Women) is now considered a landmark document in the history of woman's rights. At the time of its publication, however, the National American Woman Suffrage Association (of which Stanton had served as its first president), after active debate at its annual convention, distanced itself from both the work and its author, and adopted a resolution that, "This association is non-sectarian, being composed of persons of all shades of religious opinion, and has no official connection with the so-called 'Woman's Bible' or any theological publication." This resulted in Stanton becoming marginalized in the woman's rights movement for the remainder of her life.

Folded once and in an envelope with 'Whist for 2. | Rules by Miss Stanton.' on cover. The second bifolium carries another set of instructions, over three pages, with no heading, beginning: 'The dealer deals 11 cards to each person face downwards and then asks his adversary to name the trump the cards already dealt being placed on the table in this way'. This second section concludes: 'It is a good game for two person [sic] and is best played with 2 packs of cards each person keeping his own pack -'. The single leaf carries a two page set of instructions headed 'How to play the game of Mrs. Allport'. This begins: 'Having cut the cards the lowest deals - and the other party names the trump'.
