Beautiful cover design by Starmer. Stanley Murphy (1875 - 1919) was an Irish-American lyricist known for his work on popular early 20th-century songs, often collaborating with composers like Henry I. Marshall (1883 - 1958). Marshall, an American composer, worked extensively in vaudeville and Broadway. Among their well-known collaborations is another Bee inspired song written a year earlier in 1912 - "Be My Little Baby Bumble Bee" Both songs are in the vaudeville style, popular in the early 20th century. [Verse I] Neath a big birch tree Lived a Bumble bee, And he knew that he was in love; For of late he'd seen, Oh, the cutest Queen! In the orchard just up above. So they met one day, In a field of hay. On a clover blossom red. And he buzzed around Till these words he found. A note about the cover art : Some of the most creative and eye-catching cover art of the ragtime-era were done by one of the prolific, but elusive, Starmer Brothers. Their work was of consistently high quality and they were turning out nearly a quarter of all large format covers from the late 1890s to around 1919. The identity of the artists was unknown until an invoice was discovered with a printed heading describing "Starmer" as artist and medical draughtsman. Not much else is known about the Starmer family.
