Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Calabashes and Kings: An Introduction to Hawaii by Stanley D. Porteus (Pacific Books, Palo Alto, 1945). An early cultural and historical survey of Hawaii written during the territorial period-before statehood-when the islands were undergoing profound cultural and political change in the shadow of World War II. Porteus, a noted anthropologist, explores Hawaiian traditions, history, and social life with an eye toward presenting the islands' unique cultural identity to an American mainland readership. The book reflects both the romanticization and early scholarly interest in Hawaii during the mid-20th century. Published by Pacific Books (Stanley M. Croonquist, publisher), this edition features a striking blue cloth binding with a decorative tropical motif panel of palm fronds and flowers-a design that makes the book as visually appealing as it is historically important. • Author: Stanley D.
