Purchased by Louis88Books, unfortunately in a poor state of repair, with the bookplates from the original volumes now affixed to the new front paste downs in both volumes. Recently rebound in half leather with gilt titles to blue and black title labels five raised bands, blue cloth boards, in very good condition, complete with all plates as called for. This copy includes a 15 page 'Orders received for the Life of Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson, K.B. Previous to its Publication' and a 45 page 'Explanation of the Engravings' which includes a detailed description of the engravings (source, painting, artist, dimensions of the original work etc). The Pre-publication Orders includes all the pre-orders for this work including from Admiral the Right Hon. Lord Viscount Hood, Governor of Greenwich Hospital. Against this entry is the word 'Proofs'. Pagination: Vol I - vi, 15, [1], xlv, [i], 375pp; Vol II - [ii], 511pp. With 16 plates to both volumes, including frontispieces, chapter heading vignettes, 4 Battle plans and a tail piece. All the plates have a pencil '9S' to the top right hand corner. Provenance: with Viscount Hood's bookplate to both volumes, also bookplate for Clarice Vivian, both from the original volumes. Approximately 13 ¾ inches (35cm) tall (page height is 13 ½ inches or 34cm).
