The authior sub-titled his history as being "the stories behind New Zealand stamps"' with these stories beginning in 1855 with the first issue being an image of Queen Victoria who, the author noted in his introduction, "dominated NZ's stamps for the first 43 years." He added that in 1898 postal auhorities recognised that stamps could serve another patriotic purpose -- promotion of the country's natural attractions. Thus, the first pictorial stamps appeared, beginning a stamp series that eventually covered almost every aspect of life in the country, such as flora and fauna, notable scenic locations and buildings, industry and commerce, recreation, trade, two World Wars, Health and Air Mail Stamps while continuing with images of the Royal personalities throughout. From that promotional decision came numerous colourful NZ stamps, including many issues that became sought-after by collectors, domestric and international. Richard Wolfe approaches his topic in chronological order, taking his stories up to the mid-1960s, to the point when NZ introduced decimal currency. His narrative provides a short histoy of NZ's progress and development through these stamps. He also examines the skilled artistry involved in stamp design and the techniques of their production. A reader of this fine book does not need to be a stamp collector to enjoyr and admire this nostalgic and excellent publication.
