Signmed and inscribed by author to previous owners and signed again on title page. 349 pages. Reg Sprigg worked for the South Australian Geological Survey, which sent him to reopen the Radium Hill Uranium Field in 1944, and to map the Mount Painter uranium field. When he discovered the fossils, apparently while eating his lunch, he realised that these fossils were very ancient, either of Early Cambrian, or possibly even of Precambrian age. He submitted a paper to Nature, but it was turned down. He travelled to London and presented his findings to the 1948 International Geological Congress, but failed to excite either interest or belief. Subsequent work by the University of Adelaide demonstrated that they were indeed of latest Precambrian age. Although Precambrian animal fossils had been reported before, they had not been universally accepted as organic. This discovery led ultimately to the erection in 2004 of the Ediacaran Period, the first new geological period created in more than one hundred years. In 1968, he purchased the pastoral lease of Arkaroola, a property and important uranium exploration field of 610 square kilometres in the Flinders Ranges, and turned it into a wildlife refuge and tourist attraction.…

Colour-pictorial papered boards unevenly sunned on the spine; an excellent copy. The half-title is signed by the author ('of Arkaroola Wildlife Sanctuary | Flinders Ranges South Australia'). Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed by him (2 pages octavo, being the outer pages of a bifolium with his printed letterhead, 14 January 1994). The letter is addressed to a former colleague, Mrs Patricia Brooks. The first part of the letter deals with the forthcoming reunion, at Arkaroola in March, of former employees of Geosurveys, the company he formed in 1954, 'one of Australias earliest geological and geophysical consultancy companies' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). 'Quite a number of outsiders wanted to "break in". Lenny Beadell and one or two others are permissable! . Sadly many have passed on . So many have died only in the last year - I suppose that is to be expected - and one wonders when one will be next? . I have had more than half a dozen near misses, viz (1) Diving mishaps. (2) Aircraft forced landings (3 in one day!!) (3) brain haemorrhage, (4) Hepatitis . (5) four heart bye-passes and (6) one heart attack since. Not bad really. I can't now complain but hope I make it to and beyond the Geosurveys Reunion'. He did that, but not by much . 'Reginald Claude Sprigg (1919-1994), geologist and ecotourism operator . died on 2 December 1994 in Glasgow while on holiday in Scotland. His ashes were scattered at Arkaroola. Awards, a lecture series, a mineral, an undersea canyon, and a research centre at the University of Adelaide, among other things, have been named after him' (ADB). Some obituaries and related ephemera are also loosely inserted. Signed.…
