Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. National parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Glacier preserve some of this country's most cherished wilderness landscapes. While visions of pristine, uninhabited nature led to the creation of these parks, they also inspired policies of Indian removal. By contrasting the native histories of these places with the links between Indian policy developments and preservationist efforts, this work examines the complex origins of the national parks and the troublingconsequences of the American wilderness ideal. The first study to place national park history within the context of the early reservation era, it details the ways that national parks developed into one ofthe most important arenas of contention between native peoples and non-Indians in the twentieth century. Examines wilderness preservation in the United States from the antebellum era to the first half of the twentieth century, showing how the early concept of wilderness as the place where Indians lived (or should live) gave way to the ideal of uninhabited wilderness. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First edition. An association copy, inscribed on the title page: "For Polly Dyer, Thank for your broad & deep interest in parks and wilderness. Very best regards, Mark Spence." Uncommon signed. Polly Dyer was an important conservationist in the Northwest, instrumental in the protection of Olympic National Park and the formation of Northern Cascades National Park (she was a co-founder of the Northern Cascades Conservation Council). She also helped argue for Wilderness Act of 1964, testifying before the US Senate that wild places are "a priceless asset which all the dollars man can accumulate will not buy back." She and Howard Zahniser are mutually credited with the pivotal definition of wilderness as "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." Her papers are held at the University of Washington. Mark David Spence's Dispossessing the Wilderness had been hailed as a landmark in environmental history, reconstructing the way Native peoples were removed and excluded from National Parks from their foundation and onward. The book looks in particular at Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Glacier National Parks. With glowing blurbs by Carolyn Merchant and William Cronon among others. A fine book with Dyer's address stamp on the front free endpaper as well as a purchase/price sticker on that page with Dyer's name on it. In a very good jacket on account of one half-inch tear to lower corner of front panel, otherwise near fine. A nice association.
