Over 400 colour illustrations of the finest works of art, described with prices, cover the whole range of items available at Sotheby's Worldwide. The twelfth-century Gospel Book of a great German prince. Henry the Lion, attraeted the attention of both the press and the public. The lavish splendour of its pages justified its reputation as one of the most important medieval manuscripts left in private hands. A packed saleroom listened with astonishment as the price rose quickly to £7.4 million, the highest price ever paid at auction. Among the major collections sold this year were, in New York, furniture and decorations owned by Mrs Charles Wrightsman, and Impressionist paintings from the collection of the late Erna Wolf Dreyfuss. In London, pictures and works of art formerly in the possession of the late Lord Clark were d ispersed, including Turner's freely composed canvas, Seascape: Folkestone; this became the most expensive picture ever sold, when it fetched £7.37 million. Furnishings from the late Florence J. Gould's villa at Cannes were auctioned in Monte Carlo. Many important works of art are discussed in detail by scholars and experts in the appropriate field: Dr Fritz Koreny of the Albertina, Vienna, reviews the significance of a hitherto-unknown panel painting by Hans Hoffmann, which was probably executed for Emperor Rudolf II; Professor Theodore Reff of Columbia University, New York, examines Degas's pastel of Mary Cassa tt at the Louvre, while Shirley Bury and Michael Snodin of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, explore the création of John Flaxman's great Shield of Achilles. As well as being a splendid visual review, Art at Auction is an important reference book for the amateur collector and expert." Very Good in used dustwrapper.
