Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: Fair. British Motor Cars (1952) ? John F. Speed Published by GT Foulis | ISBN: proudly none Condition: Good (in that marvellously ambiguous second-hand way) Offered to the unsuspecting public by: Crappy Old Books Step back into a Britain where petrol smelled of adventure, men were called things like ?Geoff,?… and the family saloon only broke down three times between Watford and Weston-super-Mare. British Motor Cars (1952) by John F. Speed is a gloriously earnest snapshot of motoring life before seatbelts, sanity, or sensible fuel consumption figures. This is not some slick, glossy coffee-table tribute with arty photos and lifestyle waffle. Oh no. This is the real deal: stiff-upper-lip British motoring from the age when handling meant ?Try not to die on corners,? and comfort meant ?The heater might work this year.? Written with the straight-faced seriousness of a Ministry pamphlet and the unshakeable optimism that Lucas electrics would definitely work tomorrow, it?s a deliciously vintage guide to cars that rusted heroically, leaked oil patriotically, and occasionally started. Inside you?ll find: Solid, serious text about cars that would nowadays be classed as ?heritage artefacts? or ?catastrophic restoration projects.? Reverent descriptions of manufacturers who either no longer exist, merged with someone else, or now produce something depressing and sensible. Black-and-white illustrations that smell faintly of post-war austerity and cold tea (metaphorically; we can?t guarantee the tea). A tone of absolute confidence that British engineering will stride forward forever and ever, unfazed by small inconveniences like reality, foreign competition, or basic ergonomics. About this copy Condition is rated Good , which in the noble tradition of second-hand books translates roughly as: The cover is intact and doing its best. Any scuffs, creases or minor battle scars merely add patina and ?period authenticity.? The pages are all present (we checked, because we?re nice like that) and perfectly readable. Some may bear the gentle tanning of a life well lived on various bookshelves, dashboards, and possibly the odd damp bedside cabinet. There may be the faint aroma of ?old book?: that intoxicating blend of paper, dust, and 1950s dreams of a new bypass. If you?re lucky, you might even get a ghostly hint of pipe smoke or garage air. No extra charge. No dust jacket? Possibly. A faded spine? Quite likely. Small marks or previous owner?s name? Possibly something like ?D. W. Hargreaves, 1957? written in fountain pen, which instantly makes the whole thing feel more authentic and 37% more collectible. ISBN: None. Just? none. In a move that screams pre-modern bureaucracy , this classic appears proudly without an ISBN. This means: It predates the era when every printed object needed a numerical identity crisis. You cannot simply scan it into some smug app and pretend you?re organising your life. You actually have to look at it, hold it, and maybe even read it. Shocking. Why you might want this (and you probably do) For the classic car nut: Perfect for someone who owns a 1950s British saloon and calls it ?she,? just before spending another £600 on parts. For the design nerd: A beautiful snapshot of period typography, layout, and illustration?back when ?brand guidelines? consisted of ?Use whatever type is to hand.? For the ironist: Ideal if you enjoy reading very serious statements about cars with drum brakes all round, crossply tyres, and ?adequate performance for normal needs.? For the nostalgia addict: This book is basically a portal back to a time when the AA man was your emergency contact and everyone kept a blanket in the boot in case of breakdowns or national disaster. About Crappy Old Books Here at Crappy Old Books , we specialise in the noble art of re-homing slightly battered, deeply charming volumes that smell like your grandparents? loft and have seen things. We do not pretend they are mint. We do not claim they are ?as new.? We celebrate every crease, scuff, and mysterious pencil tick in the margin as evidence that someone, once upon a time, actually used the book for its intended purpose instead of stacking it on an Instagram shelf. So if you?d like a modestly worn, utterly sincere slice of British motoring history?complete with all its quirks, blind optimism, and implied oil leaks?this Good copy of British Motor Cars (1952) by John F. Speed is waiting for its next slightly eccentric owner. Give it a home. It?s not getting any younger.
