Añadir al carritoSee his entry, and that of his father, in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged, with neatly-trimmed remnants of a windowpane mount adhering to the edges of the leaf. Folded twice for postage. Addressed to 'My dear Madam' and signed 'R. W:', followed by odd flourish. Begins: 'Permit me to make my little offering in honor of a day which I am sure in your case, at any rate, is kept truly and honestly as a happy anniversary - We poor single things can only look on - admire, and envy!' - (and perhaps hope to do likewise one of these fine days)' (Westmacott would not marry until 1845). He wishes her 'and Mr B.' 'many returns of your wedding-day-keeping', and sends his best regards 'to the Demoiselles', whom he hopes will 'also soon provide similar occasions for their friends to wish them joy'.

In fair condition, lightly aged, with dab or red wax to one corner, and part of another corner torn away, presumably in breaking open the seal. Folded diagonally for postage. Addressed to 'My dear Mr Cooke' (the recipient's identity is beyond doubt) and signed 'Richd Westmacott'. His conscience will not let him 'rest under a doubt - and the 5 or 6 bits of Joy growing up in front of my window will plague me every time I look at them if I fancy either of them there sprouting unfairly come by.' He asks him not to think him 'over punctilious then in sending you the price of 20 3.' In any case he is 'still much indebted; for that which was a poor mangy-looking wall is now pretty well covered'. He ends with 'Compts to the Ladies'.

Añadir al carritoSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 5pp, 16mo, on two bifoliums of gilt-edged laid paper. In very good condition, lightly aged and folded once for postage. Signed 'John Bowring'. Written in playful, mock-heroic style. Begins: 'Many, many days ago my dear Mrs Villiers, did I put sackcloth on my shoulders & pile ashes on my head anent a very wicked sin of omission, in which I was peccant towards you - you who I humbly trust in your great goodness will fling over me the mantle of your forgiving charity'. He continues: 'The fact is - no living Lady - I mean no mortal lady writes so well as you do so I attributed your note to gentlemanly calligraphy & sent an answer to an E. Villiers who rejoiceth (as he may in truth well rejoice) in being your son.' The letter continues in the same tone, with the son having 'disdained any such beneficient intention towards me - & then the light flashed on me - & then came a resolution to crave mercy at your hands - & then - and then - the old worn out story - of the creeping on of to morrow'. He hopes to be pardoned for his 'shameful and ungrateful request'. The item is from the papers of Lady Maria Theresa Lewis (nee Villiers) (1803-1865), to whom Mary Berry left her papers for publication. The Lewis papers also contain a covering letter on the subject to Lady Theresa Lewis from Lockhart.
