A beautiful example of the American map publisher Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr.'s 1872 map of the states of Iowa and Missouri. Covers the entire state of Missouri as well as adjacent parts of Illinois and Kansas. Missouri played a pivotal role in the events leading up to the Civil War. The Missouri Compromise, which allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state, stipulated that all future states north of Missouri's southern would not hold slaves. Though the Compromise briefly alleviated north-south tensions, it would only last until the 1854 the Kansas-Nebraska Act nullified the Missouri Compromise, setting the stage for the Civil War. This map also identifies various cities, towns, rivers and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is color coded according to political boundaries with elevation rendered by hachure. One of the most attractive American atlas maps of this region to appear in the mid-19th century. Features the vine motif border typical of Mitchell maps from the 1866 - 1882 period. Prepared by S.A. Mitchell for inclusion as plate nos. 41 in the 1872 issue of Mitchell's New General Atlas . Dated and copyrighted, 'entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1872 by S. Depicts the whole of the continent from Panama to Cape Horn. Includes the Falkland and South Georgia island groups. Surprisingly accurate detail of the interior of Brazil and the Amazon Basin. An inset map in the lower right quadrant depicts the Isthmus of Panama entitled 'Map Showing the Proposed Atrato-Inter-Oceanic Canal Routes, for Connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.' Work on the Panama Canal would begin in 1880 and be completed in 1914. This map also identifies various cities, towns, rivers and an assortment of additional topographical details.
