Thus the author's main objective in Discovering Modern Mathematics is to provide every pupil with a foundation of meaningful and practical mathematics. Many topics have been introduced using traditional approaches and practices; many have been re-interpreted in the terms of modern mathematical thinking. Some of the new topics introduced include number sentences, inequalities, the number line, and elementary geometric ideas. Throughout, the authors have attempted to select content that is necessary and appropriate for children at this grade level. The authors hope that the material selected will stimulate the interest of the pupils and enable them to apply mathematical principles with greater understanding. The needs of individual pupils have been carefully considered. Identification symbols indicate the reteaching material and extra practice for specific topics.
