Añadir al carritoSoft cover. 1st Edition. Small octavo. Pp. xii, 13-127. Half-title, dedication leaf, preface. With text figures. Appendices. Original errata slip tipped-in onto the appropriate place. Original publisher's printed stiff wrappers, spine frayed. In a very good condition, fine interior. ~ FIRST EDITION. Most uncommon in this issue of original publisher's printed wrappers and including the practically always missing errata-slip. Charles Piazzi Smyth (1819-1900) was astronomer-royal for Scotland, professor of practical astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh. He was heavily influenced by pyramid theorist John Taylor who theorized that the Great Pyramid was planned and the building supervised by the biblical Noah. Refused a grant by the Royal Society, Smyth went on an expedition to Egypt in order to accurately measure every surface, dimension, and aspect of the Great Pyramid. He subsequently published his book "Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid" (1864). He claimed that the measurements he obtained from the Great Pyramid of Giza indicated a unit of length, the pyramid inch, a God-given measure handed down through the centuries from the time of Israel. His conclusion was that the architects of the pyramid could only have been directed by the hand of God. ~ [Provenance:] With inscription and contemporary bookplate of Norfolk & Norwich Library on cover. Beinlich-Seeber 18874, quoting the book unseen. [NOTE: We offer also the FIRST EDITION, in original binding, of Smyth' "A Poor Man's Photography at the Great Pyramid in the Year 1865"]. Añadir al carritoNine works bound in one volume. 8vo. Bound in twentieth century blue cloth, manuscript title label to spine. Most paper wrappers bound in. A very good set. Internally the works are generally clean, a couple of paper wrappers have wear to the edges, or have been backed onto paper. A sammelband of several uncommon nineteenth century works on wine and the wine trade, chiefly published in France. It contains two copies of Auguste Luchet's uncommon Le Clos de Vougeot et la Romanee-Conti, his history of the two famous vineyards. There are two works on Madeira and Port by the wine merchant Alfred Smyth, who was based on the Rue De Maubeuge, Paris. Von Baumheuer's Tables Indiquant La Richesse En Alcool. is uncommon. We have traced no copies of the work in commerce, and twelve in libraries. The work on Phylloxera, the insect whose proliferation devastated French wine production in the late nineteenth century, is rare. No copies have been traced in commerce, there is no copy at the BNF, and just one copy located worldwide (Kew).…
