Inscribed 'A Monsieur de La Martine, Membre de l'Académie Française, Historien, Philosophe, Voyageur en Oriente, Hommage de Captaine Smyth … et de Dr Lee … Hartwell Avril le 28. 1853.' In 1864, Lee named the lunar sea Mare Smythii after him. The recipient here is Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869), the French poet, writer, and statesman, author of Impressions, souvenirs, pensées et paysages pendant un voyage en Orient (1835).
