Born in New Britain, Connecticut, Harry James Smith (1880-1918) was an author, playwright, and pioneer in the use of sphagnum moss as a surgical dressing during the First World War. He died in a tragic accident while arranging wartime shipments for the Red Cross. On the endpaper of this copy is a long note by E. M. B. [Ethel Morgan Barry] commenting on her experience working in New York for Smith in the "secret" experiments with sphagnum moss. Original black cloth spine and green boards. Printed paper spine label.
