Paper / Soft cover reprint edition in very good or better condition, slight wear to edges. Overall good copy of this scarce title. Excellent read. A good book to enjoy and keep on hand. Or would make a great gift for the fan / reader in your life. Historical background: Expedition of 1826-1827 : Smith spent almost a year on this journey, leaving Great Salt Lake with fifteen men for a trapping and trading expedition on August 22, 1826. The trip is summarized in this letter of Smith and the first of the two journals by his companion Harrison Rogers. Starting from an established fur trade rendezvous site at modern Laketown, Utah, Smith's party passed southwest through lands belonging to the Ute, Paiute, and Mohave nations and reached the Colorado River in early October. Crossing the Mohave Desert, they reached the Spanish mission of San Gabriel, near present-day Los Angeles, the following month, where they spent the winter. Because the Spanish would not let Smith trade in their coastal settlements, he traveled north up the central valley of California before climbing through the Sierra Nevada Mountains at the end of May. The party, crossed Nevada close to the route of modern-day U.S. Highway 6 and entered Utah near present-day Grandy. The party reached the rendezvous site near Great Salt Lake again in July, 1827. Expedition of 1827-1828 : After this trip, Smith and Rogers immediately retraced their route with another group of traders. but half were killed before they reached California. Smith, Rogers and the survivors continued north from California into Oregon and up the Pacific Coast, where all but Smith and three others were killed. The journey from California to Oregon is described in the second of Rogerso journals. Smith made it to a British trading post at modern Vancouver, British Columbia, and then to the Missouri country. Excerpt: Jedediah Strong Smith, unlike most of his contemporaries in the fur trade, came of pioneer New England stock. His father, plain Jedediah Smith, a native of New Hampshire, following that first stream of emigration into the Mohawk valley, settled in Chenango County, New York, toward the close of the eighteenth century. Here, on June 24, 1798, in the town of Bainbridge, his son, Jedediah Strong, was born, being one of fourteen children. 'Subsequently his parents pushed farther west living for a time in Erie, Pennsylvania, and finally in Ashtabula, Ohio. During his childhood, Smith acquired from a friendly physician, Dr. Simons, the rudiments, of an English education, and a smattering of Latin, and a fair hand. All through his life, Smith retained a warm affection and respect for this gentleman, whose daughter later married, one of Smith's brothers. It may very well have been he who first suggested to, Smith the utility of making a careful geographical study of the far West, an object which, Smith had seriously in mind . Please send us a note if you have any questions. Thank you. Book.

23.8x15.5 cm, pp. [1-2: blank] [3-8] 9-31 [32-34] 35-259, 3 maps (one folded), original red cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained red, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition. Issued as Clark's "Western Frontiersman Series," volume XVIII. In August Smith's party set out from the 1826 rendezvous on a "South West Expedition" in search of beaver. By the spring of 1827 they were in central California, having entered the Mexican territory via the Mojave Desert route. The party elected to return to the Great Salt Lake through the Sierra Nevada. In May 1827, after two unsuccessful attempts due to heavy snow, Smith's party crossed the Sierra crest near the present-day Ebbetts Pass, the first crossing of the Sierra Nevada by European men. See pages 167-171 for Smith's account of this historic crossing of the range. For an analysis of Smith's route see Francis P. Farquhar, History of the Sierra Nevada (1965), pages [23]-29. See Wagner-Camp, rev. Becker (1982), item 34 (note) regarding collaboration of Farquhar's choice of Smith's crossing of the Sierra Nevada by the Ebbets Pass route, resulting from the discovery of a transcript of part of Smith's journal published in 1977 as The Southwest Expedition of Jedediah S. Smith: His Personal Account of the Journey to California, 1826-1827, edited by George R. Brooks (Glendale: Arthur H. Clark, 1977). Lower corner tips bruised, a nearly fine copy. (#166247).

No Binding. Condición: Very Good. quarto, one page of a four page bi-folium, formerly folded, remains of sealing wax, free franked by Smith on integral address leaf, in very good, clean condition. Smith, jurist and congressman from New Hampshire, writes transmitting documents for dissemination in the town of New London concerning the relations between the United States and Great Britain and France: "Gentlemen, In discharge of a duty I deem incumbent on me, I herewith transmit to my fellow citizens, by you, certain official documents containing as it were, a history of all our difficulties with the respective Governments of Great Britain and France. You, Gentlemen, can best determine in what manner to promulgate the information they contain. The reading and understanding of these documents will in my humble opinion completely disprove the unfounded charges which have been circulated in pamphlets and news paper paragraphs - grossly misrepresenting the conduct & views of the Executive and the majority in Congress. The perilous situation of our common country at a crisis so important as the present, ought to command the undivided support of all its Citizens - and I am satisfied that every rational mind after having a correct view of the real situation of this country with reference to the conduct of the Belligerents of Europe, must be convinced of the propriety & highly approve of the measures which have been adopted by the General Government of this Nation." Who Was Who in America, Historical Volume, p. 490 Lanman, Charles, Dictionary of The United States Congress., p. 337. Handwritten.

43.2x28 cm (folio), pp. [1-8] 1-86 [87-88: blank], 7 facsimile maps (6 folded), three in pocket at rear, printed in red and black throughout, original red cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, fore-edge untrimmed. Limited to 530 copies printed by Lawton R. Kennedy. The first work to consider Jedediah Smith's maps in detail. Includes the first publication of the "Frémont-Gibbs-Smith" map, the earliest record of Smith's explorations, found in 1953 by Wheat in the collections of the American Geographical Society. "The most respected and most widely traveled Western explorer of his era (1822-1831), Jedediah Strong Smith passed from the scene when only thirty-two years of age, and both the man and his extraordinary career were long largely forgotten. Today, however, Smith is accorded a place in American exploration overshadowed only by Lewis and Clark. As a single figure he stands second to none; as a cartographer his achievements were unequaled for almost a generation" (prospectus). Issued as California Historical Society, "Special Publication No. 26." Cloth lightly rubbed at edges, light fading to top edge of front panel, a very good copy with interior and maps in fine condition. Prospectus laid in. (#166997).
