The article was scheduled to be published in the April 1952 issue of Crosbie's magazine. Sir William Johnson (1715-1774) was the superintendent of Indian affairs for British America. See DAB, Vol V, pp. 124-128. This volume of Johnson's papers covers the period September 1758 through December 1763, including the campaigns and diplomacy of the French and Indian War, Pontiac's conspiracy, settlement of the peace, Johnson's wise policies and importance in placating and controlling the Indian tribes, especially the Six Nations of Iroquois. It parallels Volume III and a part of Volume IV of the Johnson Papers, supplementing and filling out the picture of those years. Illustrated with 12 plates. This volume is also of interest to numismatists for its information on the rare Montreal Medals -- awarded in the late Spring and Summer, 1761 by Johnson to 182 Native Americans who remained loyal to him and to the British army throughout the Montreal campaign of 1760. Sir William Jo…hnson, 1st Baronet (c. 1715 - 11 July 1774), was an Irish official of the British Empire. As a young man, Johnson moved to the Province of New York to manage an estate purchased by his uncle, Admiral Peter Warren, which was located amidst the Mohawk, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois League. Johnson learned the Mohawk language and Iroquois customs, and was appointed the British agent to the Iroquois. Because of his success, he was appointed in 1756 as British Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the northern colonies. Throughout his career as a British official among the Iroquois, Johnson combined personal business with official diplomacy, acquiring tens of thousands of acres of Native land and becoming very wealthy. Johnson commanded Iroquois and militia forces during the French and Indian War, the North American theater of the Seven Years' War (1754-1763) in Europe. His role in the British victory at the Battle of Lake George in 1755 earned him a baronetcy; his capture of Fort Niagara in 1759 brought him additional renown. Serving as the British Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the northern district from 1756 until 1774, Johnson worked to keep Indians attached to the British. Volume IV of The Papers of Sir William Johnson covers the period from January 3, 1763, to the end of the year 1765. In one respect the material in volume IV differs somewhat from that of the three previous volumes. For the three years 1763, 1764, and 1765, the partial and total loss of the Johnson Papers by the fire of 1911 was especially severe. Some copies of the letters destroyed were obtainable from other sources. The Calendar of the Sir William Johnson Manuscripts compiled by Dr. Richard E. Day in 1909 contained the only surviving summary of those not found. Therefore it seemed advisable to reprint more extensively those portions of the Calendar covering the destroyed materials. Pontiac's War, also known as Pontiac's Conspiracy or Pontiac's Rebellion, was launched in 1763 by a loose confederation of American Indian tribes, primarily from the Great Lakes region, the Illinois Country, and Ohio Country who were dissatisfied with British policies in the Great Lakes region following the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Warriors from numerous tribes joined the uprising in an effort to drive British soldiers and settlers out of the region. The war is named after Ottawa leader Pontiac, the most prominent of many Indian leaders in the conflict. The war began in May 1763 when American Indians were offended by the policies of British General Jeffrey Amherst and attacked a number of British forts and settlements. Eight forts were destroyed and hundreds of colonists were killed or captured, with many more fleeing the region. Hostilities came to an end after British Army expeditions in 1764 led to peace negotiations over the next two years. The Indians were unable to drive away the British, but the uprising prompted the British government to modify the policies that had provoked the conflict. Alexander Clarence Flick (1869-1942) was a historian and university professor. He taught history and political science at Syracuse University from 1899 to 1923, before becoming the New York State historian and Director of Archives from 1923 to 1939. A specialist in European history, he also wrote on New York history, the American Revolution and church history.

Dr. Hamilton was appointed senior historian in the New York State Education Department's Division of Archives and History in 1949, which he led as acting director from 1963 until he retired in 1965. Among the books he wrote was a biography, ''Sir William Johnson: Colonial American, 1715-1763,'' and ''The Country Printer,'' a study of printers, editors and publishers in New York State from 1785 to 1830. He was a graduate of Syracuse University, where he earned a master's degree in 1926. In 1936, he received a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was a professor of history at Albright College in Reading, Pa. The French and Indian War (1754-1763) pitted the colonies of British America against those of New France, each side supported by military units from the parent country and by American Indian allies. The British colonists were supported at various times by the Iroquois, Catawba, and Cherokee tribes, and the French colonists were supported by Wabanaki Confederacy member tribes Abenaki and Mi'kmaq, and the Algonquin, Lenape, Ojibwa, Ottawa, Shawnee, and Wyandot tribes. Fighting took place primarily along the frontiers between New France and the British colonies, from the Province of Virginia in the south to Newfoundland in the north. It began with a dispute over control of the confluence of the Allegheny River and Monongahela River called the Forks of the Ohio, and the site of the French Fort Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The dispute erupted into violence in the Battle of Jumonville Glen in May 1754, during which Virginia militiamen under the command of 22-year-old George Washington ambushed a French patrol. In 1755, six colonial governors met with General Edward Braddock, the newly arrived British Army commander, and planned a four-way attack on the French. None succeeded, and the main effort by Braddock proved a disaster; he lost the Battle of the Monongahela on July 9, 1755 and died a few days later. In 1755, the British captured Fort Beauséjour on the border separating Nova Scotia from Acadia, and they ordered the expulsion of the Acadians (1755-64) soon afterwards. The conflict in Ohio ended in 1758 with the British-American victory in the Ohio Country. Between 1758 and 1760, the British military launched a campaign to capture French Canada. They succeeded in capturing territory in surrounding colonies and ultimately the city of Quebec.

Sir William Johnson (1715-1774) was a British Army officer and Superintendent of Indiana Affairs in the American colonies. From Field: "By far the most valuable contributions to it are contained in the Appendix, in which are printed for the first time, and from the original MSS., two Journals, kept by Sir William, of expeditions to Niagara, Oswego, and Detroit, through the cantonments of the Six Nations, and the Ottawa Confederacy. An Account of the Language and Customs of the Six Nations, and, An Account of the Location and Numbers of Indian Tribes, both written by the Baronet, in the same volume." John Hay (1838-1905) served as the private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln until 1865. Along with John Nicolay, Hay would author a ten-volume biography of President Lincoln called Abraham Lincoln: A History. During the McKinley Administration, Hay returned to government as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, then later served as Secretary of State.
