Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a key issue of British military reform in 1871, looking at whether the nation's military strength was sufficient to meet the demands of the time. The author, clearly knowledgeable on military affairs, questions whether the country's existing defenses were robust enough to protect against potential threats. They argue that the British army had consistently performed well, but was numerically small compared to the vast armies of Europe. The author also argues that while the British army had a strong regimental system, the civil administration of the army was lacking. Ultimately, the book questions whether the abolition of the purchase system, which allowed officers to buy their commissions, would result in a merit-based promotion system or lead to political bias and a weakening of the army. The author concludes by emphasizing the importance of ensuring that any changes made to the military system prioritize the nation's safety and security. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
