The text pages are generally clean, but there is noticeable toning throughout, and the pages are brittle. The rear inner hinge has been awkwardly repaired by a previous owner, and the fron…t hinge has cracking. There are several pages that have a former owner's penciled recipes (including an inserted recipe for Angel Food cake). Isabella G. D. Stewart was the first to note a particular sponge cake recipe as Angel Food Cake in print. This recipe was first included in the 2nd edition of the Home Messenger. In this third edition, there are three variations of the Angel Food Cake. " The first recipe in a cookbook for a white sponge cake is in Lettice Bryan's The Kentucky Housewife of 1839. Since there is no butter in the cake, the angel food cake is not related to the butter cakes: snow-drift cake, silver cake or lady cake. The Home Messenger Book of Tested Recipes, 2d ed. , 1878, by Isabella Stewart contained the first recipe for Angel's Food Cake. Stewart's detailed recipe called for eleven egg whites, sugar, flour, vanilla extract and cream of tartar. " (from Wikipedia).

George Duffield (1794 - 1868) - a leading 19th-century New School Presbyterian minister, who served the First Presbyterian Church of Detroit (also called First Church of Detroit). In the early 1860s, at the onset of the Civil War, Rev. Duffield would gather the women of the First Church and would task them with finding ways to help the less-fortunate citizens of the city, primarily focusing on women and children. That would lead to Isabella founding and presiding over the "Home of the Friendless" - a charitable agency still existing today under the name "Children's Aid Society" - for which she would bring together women from more than ten Detroit churches. Shortly after, in 1862, the first edition of the current book would be published as a fundraising effort for the agency. Included were numerous recipes for oysters and lobsters, cakes, mutton and poultry, sauces, macaroni, and so on.
