Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, incl…uding their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. There was also a zonal tournament for women in Mar del Plata, in 1969, won by the Brazilian Ruth Cardoso. Silvia Kot from Argentina placed second. In 1967 the first edition of the open tournament was organized. In 1969 it became an annual event. The first edition in 1928 attracted seventeen contestants. Roberto Grau of Argentina scored clear first with 13.5 of 16. Luis Argentino Palau another Argentinian was a full point behind for second. The Brazilian, Joao De Souza Mendes, placed third with 11.5. Vicente Tulio Romano and Carlos Hugo Maderna shared fourth. Cauby Pulcherio held sixth with 10.5. Benito H Villegas captured the next spot. Lothar Maximilian Lorenz Schmid (10 May 1928 - 18 May 2013) was a German chess grandmaster. He was born in Radebeul near Dresden into a family who were the co-owners of the Karl May Press, which published the German Karl May adventure novels. He was best known as the chief arbiter at several World Chess Championship matches, in particular the 1972 encounter between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky at Reykjavic. He was also an avid collector of chess books and paraphernalia. It was reputed that he owned the largest known private chess library in the world, as well as a renowned collection of chess art, chess boards and chess pieces from around the globe. Two spots of brown rectangular discoloration on front free endpaper; one near the top right corner and the other near the bottom right corner. Both measure 1 1/4 inch in length and 1/2 inch in width. Similar markings on rear free endpaper at top left corner and bottom left corner. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked with tight binding. Very Good condition. Signed by both Henry I. Shaw and Douglas T. Kane on the front free endpaper with a 3 line inscription made out to "Admiral Fort". Inscription is dated March 31st, 1964. Several maps attached to the rear endpaper . Included are the map of the Rabaul Strategic Area, New Georgia Group, Western New Britain, the Seizure and Defense of the Airdrome, Rabaul and Its Airfields, and a Pilot's Strip Map from New Georgia to New Ireland. Barnum in the author's hand below the inscription. The first edition of Struggles and Triumphs was published by J.B. Burr & Company of Hartford in 1869. Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) was an American entertainer, businessman, and politician best known for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. A master of publicity and spectacle, he popularized hoaxes, curiosities, and grand exhibitions, including the promotion of General Tom Thumb and the Swedish singer Jenny Lind. Barnum also served as mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut. He authored several books, including The Life of P.T. Barnum, Written by Himself (1855), an autobiography detailing his experiences, Struggles and Triumphs: Forty Years' Recollections of P.T. Barnum (1869), and The Art of Money Getting (1880), offering business advice. His legacy remains influential in entertainment and marketing. There were four separate signing events around Grand Rapids on June 7th, including a book shop, the Pantlind Ballroom, Wurzburg's Department Store and Steketee's Book Department. The Governor of Michigan, George Romney, also received a signed copy of the book at a Kent County Republican Fundraiser the same afternoon. Waters, former WWI sergeant, led a legion of 43,000 remonstrators to Washington D.C. to demand early repayment of their service certificates in 1932. Introductory 4- page letter in French in roman letters signed by the author at the end; main text in German penned in a neat gothic hand arranged in half-page columns; with tactical sketches in two of the ample blank margins. also some notes. Leaves with vertical folding marks in centre- page; contents inscription on recto of front blank leaf in a contemporary gothic hand: Grundsätze Ueber die Richtung mit mehreren Batallions von dem F[eld]z[eug]m[ei]ster Grafen von Siskowitz 1782. Contemporary sprinkled brown boards; gilt morocco title label in top of backstrip; ends of spine worn; contemporary armorial bookplate pasted inside frontcover. An unpublished Austrian 18th century treatise on linear tactics and function. The present manuscript interprets the principle of officers and non-commissioned officers having to maintain a straight line consisting of several ranks when advancing in battalion strength. (The Prussians mostly used the oblique order in most of their battles). This was based on the author s experiences during the Seven Years War (1756-63), when Prussian infantry advanced in three lines of battalions with three ranks apiece. Movement in the formation was very slow and a breakdown in cohesion likely unless the battalion was well trained. Described in detail are the various manoeuvers involved for directing marching columns, keeping proper distance, and wheeling at the right moment; two illustrations (one half-page) and 15 commentaries are contained in the ample blank margins. Siskowitz, an Hungarian staff officer from Szeged, made a rapid career in the Imperial Austrian army reaching the rank of lieutenant.general . He distinguished himself at the battle of Kolin in 1757, where he successfully carried out an order by Fieldmarshal von Daun to ambush a Prussian column with a force of 7000 men for which he was decorated and ennobled. The author died in Prague on 18th December 1783. The present manuscript was submitted to the attention of an unnamed military superior by way of an introductory letter in French on the subject. The 4-page extract , dated 12th February 1783, signed C[om]te.Siskovics , has been bound to precede the manuscript in this volume. The letter refers to an imperial order by Joseph II to align flags and marching columns of several battalions before advancing on the enemy; Siskowitz states that he considers it necessary to prescribe his method saying that he has no difficulty whatsoever to submit it to the recipient as an old friend if he wishes to make use of it. However, he stresses that his system should be carefully studied before it is put it into practice. Siskovitz insists the relevant maneuvers be carried out by officers and non-commissioned officers, never by other ranks, that they must be properly exercised before applied, and that it was not sufficient to rely on reading his instructions. He states that he demonstrated his method in 1782 with 13 batallions taking 2000 steps in 8 seconds. Both letter and manuscript are written on the same quality Dutch laid paper showing two different watermarks respectively : a larger with the legend PRO PATRIA surrounding a circular composition and a smaller one wih the the crowned initials GR of the paper maker within a round border of intertwined leaves. The Pro Patria or Maid of Dort watermark shows a seated maid, holding a hat on the point of a spear, and a rampant lion brandishing a sword and holding a bundle of arrows; both are surrounded by a palisade, a symbol of Holland maintaining liberty by force of arms.
