Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Originally published in 1844, this two-volume work by William Siborne (1797-1830) represented the first major history of the Waterloo Campaign that was based on eyewitness accounts. Although Siborne, an infantry officer, had not served in the campa…ign himself, he did write to scores of officers who had, and their replies provided him with information he later used to construct the famous but controversial model of the field at Waterloo, which earned him the enmity of the Duke of Wellington (largely because Siborne's view of events conflicted with the Duke's). Siborne used much of the material for this book, which covers the entire campaign from Napoleon's escape from Elba in February 1815, through the battles of Ligny, Quatre Bras and Waterloo, right up to the Allies' entry into Paris in July. The maps published in a third volume can be viewed online. Volume 2 covers the greater part of the Battle of Waterloo and its aftermath.

A well preserved copy. ** "William Siborne, Sibourne or Siborn (15 October 1797 9 January 1849) was a British officer and military historian whose most notable work was a history of the Waterloo Campaign." - See Wikipedia *** "Captain William Siborne (1797-1852) can with certainty be identified as the last casualty of the Battle of Waterloo. True as this statement is, Siborne was never wounded in battle, nor was he on the field of Waterloo on that fateful day, 18 July 1815. Not until 15 years after the Duke of Wellington, later Lord Wellington, with Prussian help, had won the day. Siborne's misfortune lay in his brilliance as a topographer, investigator, and researcher. Ultimately, his scholarship led to revealing Wellington, by then Commander in Chief of the Army, in a sin of omission, which sealed the Siborne's fate as surely as the hangman's noose makes a kicking swinger of a man condemned to die at the gallows." - see A. W. Cockerill 2011 , Duke of York's Royal Military School . Size: 8vo.
