Joseph Gies was an editor, author and co-author of 20 books as well as many articles and short stories. As a child he was befriended by ex-Detroit Tiger outfielder Davey Jones, who inspired his love of baseball. After graduation from the University of Michigan in 1939, he went to New York in search of an editorial job, editing a Latin-American trade paper and reading scripts for 20th Century-Fox's New York story department, and eventually becoming an editor of This Week Magazine, the Sunday supplement, where he remained for 23 years. During World War II, he served with the 42nd Division in France and Germany and was present at the liberation of Dachau. When the European war ended, he worked for Yank in Paris and later Stars and Stripes in New York. In 1965, he left This Week to become an editor at Doubleday & Co., where he wrote biographies. At the same time he began a collaboration with his wife, Frances Gies, with Life in a Medieval City, published in 1969, the first in a series of nine books on medieval social history, eight of which are still in print.
