Añadir al carritoWe were unable to learn much information about the Catharine Shepherd from the resources available to us, though OCLC gives her dates as 1788-1848. Each leaf of My LadyÕs Toilette contains rhyming verses telling of an attribute that is becoming to a proper young woman. On the manuscript title-page, Shepherd writes, ÒMy LadyÕs Toilette: Whose adorning let it not be that outward / adorning of wearing of gold but let it be even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit which is in the sight of God of great priceÓ (f. [3]). Twentyfourmo (5.25Ó x 5.5Ó). [22] ff. printed on heavy paper. Twenty-color illustrations of jewelry, flowers, and containers with a hinged flap, which, when lifted, reveals a different virtue (i.e. Òmodesty,Ó Ògood humour,Ó ÒcontentmentÓ). Twenty-color illustrations of jewelry, flowers, and containers with a hinged flap, which, when lifted, reveals a different virtue (i.e. Òmodesty,Ó Ògood humour,Ó ÒcontentmentÓ). A near fine copy in the original very good glassine dust jacket with a few small chips and a single, closed tear, scarce in the very good original publisherÕs gift box that has some light wear and very minor soiling. First edition, a facsimile of the original manuscript that consists of a series of illustrations, designed and executed by the author, and presented to her niece. The title page notes that the original, Òwhich is a treasured heirloom, is yellow with age and the ink somewhat faded, but the water colors.indicate considerable talent and artistic and artistic ability.Ó It is dedicated to the author, Òthe fair Colonial Belle who more than a century ago conceived and executed these quaintly appropriate illustrationsÓ (f. [2]).

Añadir al carrito(VIRGINIA) SHEPHERD, Catharine. A COLONIAL BELL'S MESSAGE (MY LADY'S TOILETTE.) Philadelphia: C.H. Graves, (1911). Square 8vo. Pictorial boards, ribbon ties publisher's box with spider-web glassine protective inner sheets. 4 leaves of text, 20 plates. "The original of this book is a century-old heirloom in a cultured Southern family." Catharine Shepherd drew and colored elements from a lady's toilette adding a moral inscription beneath. The point of the moral is also in the illustration itself, hidden by ingenious overlays. It was reprinted here, wi faithfully recreated overlays. The book is very fragile but this copy is in fine condition, in the original publisher's embossed box. A rare survivor.
