Shepard was a freshman in pre-med when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, sending his life in a different direction - to the U.S. Naval Academy. He was off to war b…y the age of 22. Shepard earned the Navy Cross - the Navy's highest award for heroism - for his efforts in Guadalcanal in 1942. He was an ensign on the USS San Francisco as it engaged Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands. The award citation says: "With great coolness and courage, Ensign Shepard remained at his post until his director station could no longer be operated." He rescued the wounded and organized a first-aid station, which "resulted in the saving of many lives," the citation says. Shepard served as an aide to Kennedy in 1961-63, during which he oversaw the care and staffing of Camp David and the yachts, and advised the president during the Bay of Pigs incident. Shepard earned 2 master's degrees-one in strategic warfare and another in nuclear engineering. The author served as Naval Aide to President Kennedy during his term of office. He was a Naval Academy graduate and won the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism during World War II. The author reveals how John F. Kennedy's enthusiasm for the sea shaped his character as a young man, affected his career as a PT boat skipper, and influenced his thinking as the President.
